It's been years since I did any video editing, and what I used to use was VirtualDub (my needs are basic and simple). Since I'm out of the loop, I was wondering if VD is still the best free one to go to, or if it has been surpassed/superseded by any others.

Freeware only, basic requirements.

Look up Davinci Resolve and Wondershare Filmora. Both freeware, both very good. Filmora is fairly basic GUI wise but easy to get to grips with. Resolve has more bells and whistles but is a bit more difficult to get your head around.

Just FYI, DaVinci Resolve requires Open CL capable graphics hardware, so if you're using a graphics card that is around 3 years old then you're going to get a "close resolve and install open CL capable hardware" every time you start it up (I didn't bother checking if it actually worked without open CL hardware since I just removed it after I got that message, but at least the integrated graphics on my refurb are open CL capable).
