i just need something that other people can access a few files on the network..

dont need any server, backup, raid, DLNA, itunes or anything

just the cheapest way to get some files available on the network without leaving a PC on ?

Does your router have a USB port? Some routers allow you to plug in an external hard drive and share it across the network.

now just got to work out how to see it on the network.

edit:

i think i got it....

its not the fastest, taken 9 mins to delete 8gb :(

The processor/memory (or lack of there) in the router will hinder performance a lot. They are only really there for things like sharing photos or very small files.

You'll be looking at at least £100 for a NAS with anywhere decent performance im afraid.

If you have a usb hdd already you could just use a raspberry pi to connect it to your network, That would be the cheapest way I can think to do it (£28~) and a very low electricity foot print.

I have two 2.5" 1TB drives hooked up to a Pi. I use Rsync to ensure the drives are mirrored (poor man's RAID), and a couple of scripts to sync my pictures to Picasa and select documents to Dropbox.

It also has the benefit that if I want to transfer massive files very quickly I can just unplug the drives from the Pi and copy via USB 3.0 directly - this is much easier than other NAS solutions [imho].

And it uses about 4.5W of power.

Speed wise, it's certainly good enough for home use. I can play a 1080P MKV on my Apple TV without any issues.
