Hey guys,

I am from Bournemouth University, starting new course and really need a fairly basic computer, to use as a basic server, thanks to microsoft and their academic alliance they provide the software for free. The hardware is going to cost :(....

Does the following spec go?

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ 2.20GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail - £49.93
Asrock AM2NF3-VSTA (Socket AM2) AGP DDR2 Motherboard - £35.24
Corsair 1GB DDR2 Value Select PC5300C5 Dual Channel Kit (2x512MB) (VS1GBKIT667D2) - £24.66
Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 250GB ATA-133 8MB Cache - OEM (0A33408) - £38.76

Also else do i need, was thinking of adding a cheap graphics card? What memory does that motherboard use... the one on my list? if not shall i spend the extra money upgrading the motherboard?

I am a HW newb, so please advice.

Thanks

2600 PRO?

And what number RAM am i looking for?

P.s. thanks for reply

Asus ATI Radeon EAH2600 Pro HTDP Silent 256MB DDR2 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

That what you mean?

Why don't you tell us exactly what you'll be using it for (light gaming as well as just a server?) and what budget you have and we'll spec you up something good.

Personally I would either get a motherboard with either onboard graphics or look for one which uses pci express as agp graphics cards are getting harder and harder to find.

I'd also agree that 2GB of ram is a better too.

Welcome to the forums, this is about as cheap as you can physically get it on OcUK. Onboard graphics but with the option to upgrade later to PCI-E, 2gb Ram and SATA hard drive and DVDRW because it is a newer interface than ATA. :)

Hey guys, bit of a change of use, i am looking for a high performance/low price gamming system. We are talking a budget of around £400 max...

I managed to get a old server for free :), but now i am in the market for a new main PC.

Will also be used for stuff like the internet, word processing, programming and a bit of video editing with pinacle.

I dont need a case or a power supply... i will need atleast one opticle drive...

Thanks for the replies,

My freind used the spec you gave to purchase a cheap server solution.

Thanks

What power supply do you have already? If it's a no name brand then it is not a good idea to use it with high end components.

thefishdudes spec is very good. If your PSU is good enough then you can knock off the Corsair PSU from that and be well under your £400 budget.
