Basic ram clock rate info needed....

Thought I had my head round this !.

I have the QX6850....1333MHz FSB. Memory is Corsair 8000ul (1000 MHz).

Intel bus's are 'quad pumped' so the 1333 is actually clocked at 333.25 (moving data four times per each clock).

The ram is DDR (Dual Data Rate) so if running at 333 it actually outputs 666 giving me room for another 333 ??? (to reach the 8000ul's 1000).

My bios seems to report that I'm running the FSB/ram '1:1' (333>333)- sounds good, yet is there any advantage/sense in upping it to reach the 8000ul's 1000 rating ?

Any sense in what I have written ?....at all ? LOL

Regards

I found that I didn't get a noticeable performance increase when cranking the mem speed up but leaving cpu stock.
After all, fast mem needs fast bus speeds to get the best performance :D

Did what I wrote make sense ?, was it right ?.

I seem to have success running at 666 (5,4,4,9 timings @2.2v), would there be any advantage running at 999 with slower timings ?.

Regards

I would prefer running 1:1 with lower timings, as far as i am concerned there is no point at all in running faster than the FSB, and seeing as dual-channel DDR2 RAM about those speeds aren't saturated anyway, go for the lower timings :)

However i'm sure you could clock that processor a bit, and end up at DDR2-800, which would probably be a nice speed boost seeing as that processor ain't one to mess with :)

To answer your question - there would be no issue at all in going up to 1000, so go for it, just not sure if the effect is worthwhile, that's up for you to test :) Might have to raise memory voltage a bit to make it work, not sure :)

1:1 (666) feels good yet I have proved the system benefits from higher...

666 Slack timings - 2728 MB/s (4,4,3,12)
666 Tight timings - 3258 MB/s (5,4,4,9)
999 Tight timings - 4343 MB/s (5,4,4,9)

The last one didn't last long before a freeze so will have to back off a bit. This is the spec of the ram yet I believe I can't reach that as I have four sticks in the machine (two would have been OK and not loaded the memory controller too much).

One day someone will explain how a 333 bus talking to DDR memory (hence 666) can run at 999 and be better when the processor bus speed is still 333 ?.

Regards
