Can anyone advise me please?

A friend wants to record himself singing on his old computer (p3 500) running XP pro and has asked me what he needs. I'm not even sure if there is a separate sound card or not at the mo'.

He doesn't want studio recording, just enough to hear what he sounds like during a whole song etc. Is it possible/practical to do and if so what software/hardware (nothing expensive) required?

He's expecting to go to that electrical store and buy a mike for £15, plug it into the PC case and away he goes ........ I did tell him that it might be a little more complicated than that but he still wants to go ahead so all advice/ suggestions would be gratefully received.

A standard PC mic and basic onboard soundcard will do just fine in your friends case, although no matter how great singer he may be, it will still sound bad.
