Basic router question

I've got a UD5 mobo with a gigabit LAN connection wired into a Huawei Echolife HG520b router (100 Mbit), which I use for the main internet stuff, with an old laptop wirelessly connected for light internet use. My question is would I see a big jump in speed by getting a 'proper' router with a gigabit LAN connection or would it be dictated by my ISP? Clearly the wireless speed would be better but would it make much difference to the wired?

Cheers

Haven't heard of that router and you haven't said what kind of internet service you have, but a quick google shows the router being supplied by TalkTalk. If that's the case then a new router with gigabit LAN and wireless N isn't going to make any difference, wired or wireless. 100mb LAN and the ~22mb you get from 54g wireless is more than enough bandwidth for an (up-to) 8mb ADSL service.

the 100mbit tells you what speed the local network can run at

ie, if you plug in 2 machines to the router, they can talk to each other at 100mbit.

the internet speed will be whatever you're paying for..

probably around 1-24mbit

ok, so as long as that's not limiting my internet speed. I just tried a quick converter and 100Mbit = 12.5 Mbyte, so as my internet speed is up to 8Mbyte it's all good then
