Basic video recording / Edit on PC

a friend just wants to use her webcam to record a video for a birthday, is there something cheap / free she can use...

googling gives me full blown editing software when she just needs uber simple...

she does need an MP4 ideally

Windows photo .... Seriously.

It has a basic video editing part to it and will output generic standard videos.

Drag and drop videos onto a simple timeline type thing. My 8 yr old showed me it. I didn't know it existed.

but how does she get the video in the first place?

Most webcams will show as a generic camera.

If you type 'camera' into the start menu bar it should show up a camera app, which when opened should show the webcam as a source. You should be able to record a vid or take pics from that.

The option to record video may also be available from with the video section of the photo app

If you can't figure out how to do it through Photos OBS Studio is very good and pretty user friendly.
