Basin plug broke. How to fix?

The plug in the bathrooms basin has decided to stop going up and down.
Instead it now just goes straight down and I need a screwdriver to lift the darn thing up to empty water out of the basin.
Few pictures here:

more added when they upload!
I can't see anything that's snapped or broke on either the plug or plunger device... any ideas? Had a look online but couldn't find anything.

Can you see behind you sink pedestal? usually the vertical thing you pull up on the tap is connected to a horizontal 'see-saw' type arrangement under the sink. This pushes under the plug to raise it up.
It may well be that the two have disconnected...

Yeah thats one of the pictures that isn't uploading :(
I've checked that connection and its fine, if I move the plunger on the taps up and down it moves the little metal thing in the sink hole up and down.
It just seems as if that little metal bit is too far down the sink hole as theplug just drop right to the bottom (as if you were wanting to fill the basin) of the basin.

guess it could have bent out of shape or slipped? Maybe check the depth of the metal thing in the sink hole when its as high as it can go... Usually you adjust the reach of the plug using the screw in section on the plug itself but from the photo it looks like its at full reach.

can you release and re-attach the 'see-saw' section relative to the plunger on the tap?

Just happen to have one on my desk.

Looking a your photo, looks like you have lost a bit, it's come detached.

Sometimes the screws work loose on connecting block for the two rods, as a result the rod will pull out of the brass bar on the rise n fall waste plug cap.
First loosen screws in connecting block, then there should be a locking collar on the basin through which the rod goes, unscrew completely, you should be able to push the rod back in to the hole on the plunger, might need to remove trap or raise the plug & turn plunger up to align.

Tighten screw on connecting block & try it, might take several attempts to get the rods right.

I hate them monstrosities with a passion! More places to leak from and most are cheaply made. I normally bin them and stick a new pop up style waste. If the rod is part of the tap I leave it in for aesthetic purposes.

I'd tend to agree, until I saw the one my Mum got fitted last time I went home. It's an all-in-one pop-up which has now, sod's law, failed. Unfortunately, to replace it, you need to remove the entire 800mm ceramic cabinet-top basin so you can try and free the pop-up from the silicone. Fitted a few basin wastes and never seen anything like it.

Thanks Nightglow. Looks like I'm missing the little brass bit or similar at the bottom.

Was looking at them last night but I'd then have a plunger on the taps stick up for no reason.. I could just change the taps also. Been fancy a new set.

Edit: Are all sink hole the same size?

Ok Nightgow so I've taken teh trap off and looked and can't see whatever bit I'm supposed to have there. I take it's gone forever.

So whats the easiest option you think? The Mrs wants a new tap on the basin... I'm not bothered.

New mixer tap, and a basin waste outlet (slotted) with a pop up waste knob?
Tap: Clicky
Waste: Clicky
You're right mine is slotted (it has an overflow at least). I had to google slotted/unslotted as I had no idea what you were on about.

Edit: My current tap pipes are solid pipe with reducers... Can i just unscrew the pipe (see pipe) and fit a flexi tap connector like this?

Very nice tap, the flexi tap connector you link too, are the wrong ones, you need Flexible Tap Tails, one end has a thread which screws in to the basin monoblock, other end has 15mm compression fitting, will most likely be 10mm thread with 15mm compression.

You have check valves, so you can remove the pipe & cut off the reducers, so you have plain ended 15mm pipe.
