Gameplay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastion_(video_game))

Bastion is an action RPG with a level structure. As a hero known as the Kid, the player move through fantasy-themed environments that form paths on the fly. In order to progress, the Kid must defeat enemies using a variety of melee and ranged weaponry, collecting items and levelling up his attributes with experience points along the way. Between levels, the Kid visits the Bastion, where he can use the money he has accrued to install new buildings. Here, he can utilise establishments, such as a shrine, an armory and a distillery.
The game incorporates a unique feature called 'dynamic narration'. The nameless old wise man (voiced by Logan Cunningham) serves as the game's narrator. As well as delivering story exposition, he will constantly give different commentary based on the player's actions and style of play - for example, he might remark upon the player's affinity for a certain weapon if said weapon is used frequently during battle.

Would be interested to hear some thoughts on the game from people who have bought it, really tempted to pick it up.

Yeah same here though I've still got Torchlight sat untouched atm. As I'm unlikely to buy all the Summer of Arcade titles I might hold out for the inevitable discount to 800 points in a couple of months.

i had hoped that there were more RPG elements in it, from the trailers it does look like a hack and slash game with the visual style of secret of mana.

seems to be well received critically (has an 88 average on metacritic)

Torchlight was fantastic imo, id definitely play that first

Yeah I can't wait to get stuck in though I've just gone through Dungeon Siege III and needed something a little different first.

I've put my Xbox in the cupboard now as it was gathering dust. Reckon I'll wait for the Steam version. Certainly looked good at the E3 conference, the woman who did the art has done a great job.

Trial is great and really shows the game off well. The voice over guy sounds like the guy from Epic Meal Time :D

Im not sure whether ill buy it yet, Ms Explosion man is eating my time from the arcade and is better.

Looks awesome but I'm waiting for the PC version. I've got a ton of games that I've got to play and I don't use my 360 enough to warrant farting about with the xbox market place.

Tempted to grab this at the end of the month.

Been having a bit of time away from my 360 recently :(

ags

Certainly worth downloading, not particularly deep but good fun and has a great atmosphere due to art style, soundtrack and voiceover. I suppose the best compliment I can pay it is that after finishing it I went straight into the New Game + mode :)

Something is holding me back from loving this.

The combat is a little frustrating (like how you have to keep pushing the button to attack instead of being able to hold it) and enemies seem to be able to kill you far to quickly if you make a mistake.

Also it's a bit buggy, there's one level where the world is crumbling behind you, at one point it caught up with me and I fell....so it then respawned me in mid air 5 times and let me fall again.

Its quite samey, i felt that on the demo so havent purchased it.

I was really looking forward to this but after having played the trial, it's a "mmm, not sure" case. I didn't really have the energy to go around bashing everything in sight to collect the little blue tear drop things and as others have said, the combat was terribly clunky. I guess it will be an inevitable £1.50 Steam purchase.

Just completed it, total playtime around 10 hours (though I've unlocked 'new game+' to do a second pass to pick up what I missed. It's great fun, the artwork is great and the pacing is fun too.

Over the course of the game you pick up a fair few entertaining different weapons, meet different kinds of monsters needing special tactics to take down (for example, there are the monsters that fire bullets bullet-hell style, ones that are impervious to attack and ones that continually keep you on the move). Plus the music is fantastic, especially 'Zia's Song', a haunting tune that plays in the darkest bits of the game.

A definite purchase, it needs more love than it's received!

finished it now, loved every minute of this, easily one of the best XBLA title so far imo. i'll definitely be picking up the soundtrack (think its only £6.50).

a seriously underrated game

I find the combat sluggish and the little fast moving black comma things are irritating as hell,

Sometimes the world doesn't "compile" quick enough and I will run ahead and fall off, and sometimes when I fall off it will respawn me over a gap so I fall again and again until I either run out of health or it gets it right,

After a few levels I grew bored of the narrator and used the same routine for all combat

It is a fun game but not worth the 1200 points,

6/10
