batch renaming files, and sorting them by date modified any programmes out there?

Hi

I'm going through a load of pics i've taken with my camera and really need a way to rename and sort them by the date they were modified*, can anyone recommend a good (free preferably) programme that can do it automatically?

I've tried Irfanview which can rename them, but not take into account the date they were last modified/originally created (or taken).

*In part because my new camera uses the exact same naming convention as the old one (which is causing problems).

I wasn't looking forward to renaming about 1000+ photos by hand (I tried it with about 20 and that was enough)
