Bath - restaurant recommendations?

The girlfriend and I are off to Bath next weekend, just for one night. Really want to avoid the tourist traps where possible, and make sure we get a nice meal on Saturday evening. Does anyone have any recommendations? :)

Although I have never been, I've heard very good things about the Olive Tree. It has a michelin star if you fancy something a bit more upmarket but I don't think the pricing is actually too bad.

If your looking for something a little more low key, Sotto Sotto is a very nice Italian restaurant. Ole Tapas is nice if you want, well Tapas :P. Hudsons Steak house does a very nice steak and Firehouse Rotisserie was very nice when I went but that was a couple of years ago since my last visit.

If you've got time for breakfast, find a place called Wild Cafe. It's a tiny place in one of the backstreets but the food is really good.

Thanks. Yeah I'd spotted the Olive Tree but it might be a little more than what we want to spend on a random weekend away. It's been a while since we've done proper fine dining so I'm tempted, but really we should leave that for a special occasion (like my upcoming birthday :p). I don't know if I'm talking nonsense but that also seems like London prices for a tasting menu?

Hmn..

I know you said to avoid the tourist places, however, like Paris etc you wouldn't avoid the Eiffel Tower of the Louvre.

We had a week local to Bath and when we visited we had lunch @ Sally Lunns - nom! and have always wanted to try the Pump Room at the Roman Baths, but never got the chance :(

For an evening meal, the Olive Tree is a definite good shout.

Thanks, I was looking at afternoon tea at the Pump Room but it does seem a little touristy.

I'm looking at Clayton's Kitchen or Henry's for dinner on Saturday night. Hmn.

My other half went to the Royal Crescent Hotel for afternoon tea last year and said it was very nice indeed, it's not cheap though at £35 PP if I remember correctly.

The Bath Priory mentioned above by ttaskmaster also does a nice afternoon tea as well (£30 PP).

Edit - The Pump room is nice but it is a tourist spot, it's almost bang in the centre and right next to the cathedral so gets a lot of tourist traffic. Same with Sally Luns, it's not far from the pump room either so while a nice spot (the bath bun is tasty and reasonably priced) it gets busy with tourists.

The Bath Priory.
Hmn I just can't get excited by that judging from the pictures. Sorry :(

I've just realised that everywhere is getting booked up. Couldn't get a table at the Clayton Kitchen, haven't heard back from Henry's. So I've booked a table at Corkage which seems a bit different but might be fun - aware it's more of a winebar but the food looks decent.

I'm now wondering if I should get somewhere booked for Sat or Sun lunch? Is Bath that busy on a weekend?

Really? You judge on pictures?
Perhaps TGI Fridays would be better. :p
I mean the dining room specifically. I'm not saying I wouldn't eat there but looking at the room it's not pushing it up the top of my list.

EDIT: Any recommendations for aperitifs? I like the sound of the Canary for the gin but it looks like it's "just" a bar (i.e. no table service). What about the Dark Horse? Or is that preferable for digestifs?

Dark Horse is cool, really nice cocktail bar. Opium bar is very quirky and fun too. Lots of random seating and random pieces of art on the walls. Cool vibe about the place. Sub 13 I've heard good things about (Gin place) but never went when I was there.

Thanks. Sub13 looks cool but now I realised you can book tables at the Canary I think I'll give that a whirl.

What's wrong with it?
It's pretty standard for French-based fine dining.
I think you answered your own question :p I've got no issue with that, I'm just not in the mood for traditional French fine dining. Seen as places in Bath seem to be pretty similar to London prices, I think I'll save that for a trip to one of the London hotels etc.
