Hi all

I'm about to 'have a go' (I've done a lot of DIY plumbing and a cloak room, but never a bathroom) at refitting my dated ensuite bathroom into a modern wet room and have a couple of questions that I'd appreciate your thoughts on please, one general and one specific:

1. Where is the best place to buy all the typical bathroom kit, i.e. shower valves, taps, vanity units, towel heather, underfloor heating mats, etc.? Can I get everything from a single place or is it generally best to shop around and buy from individual suppliers, depending on what's cheapest? I'm thinking a combination of the Victoria/n sites, Screwfix, and of course, trusty Amazon.

2. I'm boarding the whole floor and walls in EPS / foam tile backer board and it seems to cost a fortune now - what's the best VFM for this type of board and where can I get it?

Many thanks.

We bought our stuff from all over the place. I wouldn’t rule anyone out, if they have what you want at a better price, just buy it from there.

The only time it makes more sense to try and combine purchases is where you need a pallet delivery which is expensive. Usually you’d want the sink/toilet to be from the same range anyway.

Edit: very brave taking on a wet room as a first attempt!

Same here, combo of bits from screwfix/toolstation/various bathroom websites based upon what we wanted and price. Big discrepancy between them all when looking, some bits were cheaper and some a lot more expensive, no one place was consistently best priced.

Drench tend to do some premium branded stuff (eg 10mm shower screens, better baths)!!, ergonomic designs do good units.

Id buy premium tap brands (e.g mira/bristan/Grohe) from anywhere

I get all my boards, bathroom/tiling building supplies from either protilertools or pure adhesion. With regards to fittings and furniture my only advice is avoid a lot of the junk promoted by the big outlets like victorian plumbing etc.

I'd Google local independant plumbing merchants in your area and approach a couple to get a quote for the materials

Thanks all, some good tips. Never heard of drench or pure adhesion.

@b0rn2sk8 Yes it's probably a bit foolish to tackle a wet room as a relative newbie, but honestly modern wet room systems almost seem more simple than some of the shower tray options, especially with a single fall and linear drain.

So it seems to me that as long as one is diligent in following the process and waterproofing correctly, it should be ok.

I just need to spend several hundred quid on a good montolit snapper and a cheap wet saw, as cutting porcelain with a grinder took absolutely ages.

Will post back when I've flooded the garage below!
