Could be the pin inside the laptop where the charging cable plugs into. Could be loose causing it to sometimes charge and sometimes not.

I had the exact same problem. Have you recently updated the Bios? I updated mine to A12 and it wouldnt charge. I didnt realise till the batter was below 10%. Putting the A09 bios back on cured it but it was a hell of a faff as it wouldnt let me update as battery was too low!

The battery could be problem as well, because I got a lot of dell laptop with faulty battery especially Inspiron 6000 series

Check in the BIOS (F2) and look at the battery health screen - will tell you if the battery is duff (or press the battery charge display button on the battery - if it flashes LED 1,3 & 5 it's stuffed). Also in the BIOS check the battery screen as it will tell you what AC adapter is attached - if it says Unknown Device or None it could be the charger or worse a motherboard. Do you know anyone else with a Dell charger? Plug that in and see if it recognises it correctly in the BIOS - it should tell you the rating of the attached charger. If it's recognised then it's probably your charger. Dell machines will only charge the battery from an adapter they recognise. Unrecognised charges will power the machine but not charge the battery (sounds like the problem you have).

its the battery ive had the same laptop but only 18montsh old and mine ailed at 1yr 2 months, my laptops always plugged in i think thats what killed it as i never discharged the battery

i had the six cell battery if you google it lots of people have this problem and dell wanted over £100 for a 6 cell battery, i managed to pick up a 9 cell for £55 from http://www.mcscom.co.uk/product.php?xProd=8162&xSec=64
think its a bit cheaper now dell wanted over £150 for this battery

you can check battery by holding in the button on it for 5 seconds if all lights light up ( after 5 secs)its dead or nearly dead
