I currently use a surge protector for my equipment protecting my equipment from surges, spikes & lighting.

Lately we seem to get more & more 'power cuts' and I have been considering the damage this could do to my PC (hard disk, cpu etc.) and also what it does long term to the Windows installation as the PC is not shut down properly.

I have been looking at Uninterruptible Power Supplies. I have never had an UPS and know very little about them.

I have looked at the APC Back-UPS ES 700VA 230V UPS as in here: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=UP-017-AP

My requirements are to prevent potential damage that might be caused from a power cut so I would only need enough time so that the PC can be shut down safely be it automatically or manually. I would need enough power for the PC and monitor (the PC will be an intel core i5-2500k)

Can anyone please advise me on this?

We had work done on our building, it caused a few power spikes and brown outs. We lost a few servers... but only ones on UPSs!

And they were good UPSs too, APC ones and in proper working order!

You are not as safe as you would like to think witha UPS.

Normally you install that software that monitors the UPS. When the UPS detects a power failure it alerts the software to begin a shutdown. Sometimes you can set them to run on power until the battery is down to x% but as this is only a desktop one the best thing to do would probably just let it shut down as its not a huge battery.

We have spent 100's of thousands on ups system at work to protect our servers and computer run machines, they are mainly set to do a controlled shut down, a few are set to keep the basic functions running for several hours, but they are beasts. . it has saved us hours in the past trying to get the systems back up and running after a black out .
We had a bad batch that only lasted about a year, some are very good but are not 100% trust worthy.
Not used them for a home system, but it could be a good idea.

I have 3 (different) APC UPS's on three comps, they are all set to do a controlled shut-down after "x" minutes, all of them have worked perfectly when called upon to do so...

The APC Back-UPS ES 700VA in the link in your op I use with a WHS box...
