For example today, I charged my phone and the battery was full. I went out for about five hours and sent around 45 texts and used whatsapp a bit - didn't use any apps or make any phonecalls... and my battery halved!

Any pointers on how to save battery? I think there must be apps running in the background. Any idea how I can find out? Also what is the correct way to exit an app? I just normally press the home button.

Thanks in advance.

On a device that multitasks - the app saves state, you need to double tap the home button and it'll list all the recently used apps. Just hold on one and a no entry symbol appears.

Push notifications also can take their toll on the battery. You can check what apps send notifications from Settings>Notifications.

Depends what Iphone he has. On a 3Gs batt life will be poor. On an iPhone it'll be godly. is it jailbroken? Chances are it'll have a ton of apps sitting in the background as mentioned.

I just did the 'double click' home button and pretty much every app on my phone, even ones which haven't been used in a while were running! I've just stopped them all.

I know battery life on any smartphone isn't expected to be great but having it fully charged before you go sleep and waking up to it being a 65 percent is just ridiculous :p

Thanks - and hopefully closing the apps has sorted it.
