Battery Draining from full overnight!

Hi,

My laptop drains its full batery overnight when in sleep mode. Ive done a fresh install of genuine retail windows , so no weird programs that could affect it, and its exactly the same. I fully charged it last night at midnight and this morning it says 7% left!

Ive noticed before that when its been on sleep sometimes its making noises like the dvd is going or a fan is moving?

Any ideas?

Went out just after this post and it was on 67%. I closed the lid and it went into sleep mode , then almost straight away made some noises by the dvdrw drive. Ive just come back in and opened the lid and its got 10% left , so its drained 57% of the battery in sleep mode in the last 7hrs

Thats not normal is it?

I've noticed my battery go from 80% (limited there to keep battery in good condition) to around 30-40% when not plugged in over a short night. Sleep keeps a lot of things still whirring as far as I know... with it being instant resume. Hibernate keeps where you were and shuts down, so much like sleep, just takes longer. Only time I actually use sleep on my laptop is if I leave it plugged in (pretty much all the time it's plugged in anyway) and if I know i'll be coming back to it in a few hours, ergo no point turning it off and starting from scratch! I noticed it go down in battery previously as my charger was not switched on at the wall!

Hope my personal experience helps, I thought this is how they always worked.

My Nan's laptop used to have terrible battery life, literally, after 15 minutes of use the battery would be empty if not being charged. After fitting a new battery, it was fine and she could use it for much longer than she could before.

Hi,

the battery life is fine , i get 4-5hrs when im using it , its just the sleep issue. I might try hibernating instead

My work HP laptop loses 2-3% overnight when powered OFF.

Yes, try hibernating it. Sleep mode isn't really intended for long term periods of storage because the constant drain on the batteries isn't very good for them.

Sleep is meant to be a "from my office to the meeting room" type of thing.
