Anyone heard of this? Sposed to be a classic anime.

Cant really find it at all though :( Anyone know if it has ever been released on DVD?

thanks

p.s. any other anime similar to Akira, Ninja scrolls, Ghost in the Shell, Princess Mononoke i could look into getting?

I really like it. Young android rebuilt after being found on a scrap heap and learns to find what her true nature is; a warrior. I read that James Cameron is currently developing a live action 3D version for the big screen.

I bought my copy on VHS when it was first released, so I'm not sure if it's available on DVD in this country. Someone may be able to point you in the right direction.

It was released on DVD in the States by ADV.

However their rights to it have expired (and I assume everyone elses have as well), and were I beleive bought up by James Cameron who is now making a live action film of it.
I suspect we may not see the anime version for a long time, probably at least until the film is done and released.

I broke one of my cardinal rules of DVD buying when I heard it was going OOP in the states, and paid full retail + shipping for it (only one retailer had it in stock).

Ghost in the Shell/Ghost in the shell Standalone Complex (GITS and GITS:SAC) are great.
Re Mononoke - look at any of the other Ghibli titles, Spirited Away, Laputa, Kiki's Delivery service, The Cat Returns etc.

P.S.
I'll merge this into the main anime thread later.

oki doki. Might get a copy of the bay at some point.

at the moment thinking of getting:

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Metropolis [2001]
X 1: One

and maybe:
Wicked City
Nausicaa Valley Of The Wind

Need to get round to watching Spirited Away, seams to be a classic.

Sorry i didnt post in there originally.

BTW - is there any way the Anime thread could be made more navigable, possibly some links or something at the beggining and maybe a little section with recomended titles from different genres?

thanks :)

i'll probably have a go at doing something soon for it (it's probably about time to start looking at starting a new anime thread).

Don't Spose there could be a section or sub-section just for Anime related things? Or maybe just a sticky with links to pages on different things.

Thanks :)

we dont want a thread we want a sub forum :p ;)

Alita is a great movie, had it on video but it got nicked :(

Sometimes goes for absolutely ridiculous money on ebay, seen it got for upto £130 ! EEK (also known as gunnm)

Vampire hunter D - I enjoyed both movies
Wicked City - saw ages ago and I loved it

Spirited away - You must Watch
Nausicaa - Another great film from ghibli ( a lot older but the animation is still amazing)

once you've started you cant stop ;)

Keep an eye out for the recent ghibli releases in the UK seem to e very nice transfers.

HMV also look like they are gonna have offers on if you buy more than one ghibli collection title.

I got nausicaa and cat returns for around £17 and they seem to be doing the same sort of deal albeit a little more expensive with porco rosso and pom poko (which was mental tbh)

Matt's Top Watches list for anime n00bs

Films
Spirited Away (this is the one that started it all for me)
GITS (great story)
Voices of a Distant Star (beautiful)
Princess Mononoke (magical)
Laputa
Kiki's Delivery Service
Sky Blue (Technically Wonderful)
Appleseed (new version) (Deserves to be higher but meh I can't fit it in)
Nausicca
Cat Returns
Loads of others :D

Series
Wolf's Rain (Modern day fairy tale which just keeps getting better) - GITS SAC 1st GIG (Brilliant) - Joint First
EVA (Weird :s but fun)
Haibane Renmei (sweet and beautiful)

I've seen others but nowhere near as many as other members here, but if I were coming to anime fresh these are good titles to start with IMHO :)

there are some great things coming soon including Blood+ and Black Cat

If you like Asian cinema and want films to complement your anime watching I can recomend Casshern (live action) and Ichi both of which I loved although freaked out move than a little by the second.

Righty after much consideration i've ordered:

Appleseed : Steelbook Edition (2 Disc)
Demon City Shinjuku
Metropolis [2001]
Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust [2000]
Battle Angel Alita: Killing Angel (Battle Angel Alita (Paperback)

Going to look to get all the thing of that list aswell Matblack, thanks very much :)

Recieved:
Appleseed - watched and its amazing! Animation - the drawn and CGI parts merge together perfectly. Story is good and the fights are very nice (Mecha rule! :p )
and
Metropolis [2001]
Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust [2000]
but haven't had chance to watch them yet. had a quick look at the animation style of Vamp D and looks sweet. Started to watch Metropolis with some mates but everyone said it looked like tintin so we watched Ninja Scrolls instead, lol. Story in it is sposed to be good though so i'll have to get round to watching it.

Now i need to decide what anime to get next

Finally recieved Battle Angel Alita: Killing Angel (Battle Angel Alita (Paperback) after i got back from holiday. Only to find it's vol 3 :(
Going to have to get 1 and 2 now *sigh* O well lesson learned...

The face looks slightly wrong, which is sort of fitting given she's meant to be an android/cyborg but it just doesn't look quite right (I guess it's the uncanny effect the likes of Pixar talk of).
I'm not sure if it'd deliberate or not.

Saw this trailer recently, looks interesting. Her face reminds me of those images people keep posting with that odd filter or whatever it is. :p
