Hey all,

I used to play a bit of Battlefield back in the day (Battlefield 2), but as I’ve gotten older I’ve steered clear of FPS Multiplayer. I know that the game mode “Battle Royale” is very popular at the moment, and I’m interested in giving it a go.

What is the most popular Battle Royale game that a beginner like me could get into?

I would prefer to stay away from Fortnite, as it looks a little too cartoony for my taste (unless I’m wrong?)

Thanks,

Marky

There's no real harm in just trying the free ones.

Battlefield V has a battle royale mode called Firestorm, but you've got to buy the game to play it and Battlefield is not what it once was.

If you enjoyed Battlefield you probably also didn't mind COD too much, so I'd have a go at Warzone, although I haven't played it myself yet. Apex can be pretty brutal for new players but it's very satisfying when it all clicks.

I’ve been watching a bit of COD:Warfare and have been tempted to give it a try (85GB Install WTF?!?!).

What’s the deal with it being free to play? I know that isn’t really free - what do you pay for in it?

I’ve not looked into Apex - will give it a watch on Twitch.

They really are free, but they all have item shops where you can spend some sort of credit that you can buy with real money or by working your way up the levels by playing. They tend to run a "season" system where there is a set of levels which you earn by acquiring XP, unlocking cosmetic items (and sometimes credits) as you level up. A "season pass" can be bought for credits which puts you on the "premium" tier, where the rewards normally come faster and are more numerous. I can't speak for Warzone, but in Apex you also unlock certain characters using the shop credits, whether you earn them through playing or paying is up to you. The characters don't tend to be unbalanced in favour of the locked characters so it doesn't normally adversely affect gameplay. In Fortnite it is just cosmetics.

Apex Legends is great fun but can be a bit daunting to begin with. Best of all it's Free to play! It's fast paced, far more than PUBG or Warzone and has a slightly more Sci-Fi-Fantasy angle but nothing too outrageous.

I was in the exact same boat - former BF2 player many years ago and nothing since.

I have never played COD until free-to-play Warzone came out but gave it a punt on the xbox. If you avoid the Battle Royale mode and play Blood Money (plunder), I am finding it bringing back at least a piece of that BF2 nostalgia. It doesn't have the fun aircraft, helicopters and tanks BF2 had, and squads are (currently) 3 man, not the team vs team of BF2, but the landscape and gameplay is quite similar and with revives it has that feeling you had playing medic :D. It can be a bit annoying if you land in a squad with numpties who want to sit in a tower sniping or don't want to actually play to win, but it's pretty quick lobbying and connecting so if I land in a squad with such people, e.g. no-one marks a landing spot or everyone ignores mine, I just jump out and reconnect.

I haven't paid for anything and don't intend to. I have got all "mods" for the weapons I play with through earning xp.

Maybe many games have been similar over the last 12-14 years, but I haven't played any in that time. I do miss the size and open-ness of BF2.
