I recently bought this game in the steam sale after getting my new PC, last time i played the game must have been 4 years ago when i had it on disc.

The problem I have as like many on the steam forums is i get the invalid CD Key error, and then when i try to fix it my BF2 will crash to desktop when i attempt to join a server.

Running windows 7 64bit.

Anyone else had the same problem and had any solutions for themselves?

If you fix CD key, you may get crashing to desktop and this is the fix but did not work for me, so crashing to desktop and CD key error still there if i revert changes

any ideas?

Can't you just use your old EA account which has BF2 already tied to it?

I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

That EA account would be donkeys old, like 4 years ago and do not have a clue what email/login i used, was a lot younger.

I have a new CD Key with steam+expansions, would expect it to work, everyone else is having the same error who bought it recently it seems.

I re bought this too over Christmas and just logged into my old account. Worked like a charm and still had all ranks, badges and unlocks.

You need to run the 1.41 patch after entering your CD key. Well that's how I fixed it but that was not the steam version.

Wasn't BF:2 a Gamespy or something login?

Thing is when you re-enter the key it sometimes is not set right in the registry, reapplying the patch sorts this. No clue if you can re-patch the steam version though.

lol, sorry for this, used the second fix in the link i posted and had to remove the key.exe from first one. working now thank god!

Remember if you have the Steam version, you need to disable the chat overlay as PB will kick you for it. Bit lame really.

I didn't have to do that.

In fact the Steam version has been problem free for me and it's also patched to the latest version as all the maps from the the expansion and booster packs are playable.

I do get kicked from COD 4 by PB if I have MSI Afterburner running.

Meh, it does it for me. Everything else works fine though!

Only game I have ever bought again just to get it in Steam.
