So I'm redownloading Battlefield 2142 off EA Store (used to be EA Link when I last used it) after hearing of a new patch for the game. Last time I tried to play the game it was a very hit and miss affair with my operating system. Sometimes the game would refuse to play at all, or crash intermittently. On contacting EA support they said the game has no proper support with Vista and is not guaranteed to work. It's been a while now, what with the middleman program recieving updates (from Link to Store) and the game recieving a patch, has compatibility and usability with Vista x64 improved?

Depends on your system knives, if you have a creative card then you may need to turn off Voip as the creative drivers are still rubbish for vista, thats the only point i have with Vista and BF2142 other than that it runs pretty well, as for the addon Nothern Strike, from what i can see there doesnt seem to be a lot of servers running it, 1 i have found is the Timeless NS server which has FF off, most of the pthers are running ethier just the 2 new maps or a 24/7 of wake.

Upon attempting to open the game I get this;

:(

check the video.con file and audio.con file in mydocuments, make sure the refresh rate is at 60hz or our monitors default and try switching voip off so should be 0 instead of 1.
If that doesnt work then im out of ideas.

Found this after a quick google

After much frustration with trying to launch BF2142 after EA updated that damned Link program, I found a solution. Basically before, I would try to launch the game, and I would get a brief hourglass, and then nothing. No game launch, no flicker, no nothing. There was a partial solution on the 'net somewhere, but this is what got it going for me in full. This is a cut and paste from another post in this forum:

1) Go to your BF2142Pace.exe file... Right-click on it and select the compatibility tab, and run the program in compatibility mode for Windows 2000...

2) Load the game by clicking on the BF2142Pace.exe file (I presume one needs EA Link going for this, but whatever). Sure now we can load the game, right! Excellent! But then, joining a server gives a "Invalid CD Key" error, and the CD Key fixes that EA has released actually do not work (WTF?)

3) Go BACK to the BF2142Pace.exe file and now UNCHECK the "Run in Compatibility mode" box (so it runs in the normal XP mode). For SOME reason, the game will launch now (?!?) and you can play online. At least this worked for me, and worked for someone else on another forum. I haven't as of yet seen the entire fix in one place yet (hopefully this is it!)

Tried that, tried everything x_x It seems some people just can't get it to work at all. Google is filled to the brim with links of people complaining that they can't get theirs to work when I put in bf2142pace.exe. This is the issue I had before that stopped me playing it before. Really hope BF3 works with Vista.

Yeah, I reckon it's an issue with the downloader - bf2142pace.exe is an anti-piracy tool that works specifically with the downloader to ensure it's not just a copied version. Any disc-based version wouldn't need pace.exe, it would just check for the disc in the drive instead.
