Battlefield 3 Out Of Memory

What GPU and how much Vram do you have?

Some one on here last week calculated 1608 or so MB of VRAM for it at those settings.

I know too, 'cos I sold my GTX 470 when it got pwned lol.

What res/settings were you running with the 470 andy? Ive never hit a limit with bf3, but the benchmark for lost planet 2 on max settings gobbled up almost all the ram on my card.

I presume im using up all my video memory. Ant ideas? Ive disabled page file as i have 8gig of ram. Running bf3 @ ultra x4aa.

This is the problem. Make page file on SSD around 2GB, and then make it system managed on another drive.

Lots of people think that just because they have 8GB of RAM they can disable their page file. Doesn't work like that!

Did you disable windows aero when playing? Can save upto 200mb of vram.

I did try that yes, it still did it.

2x6950 2048mb per card. I'm pretty sure its because ive disabled the page file. Ill be trying that shortly. It used to work fine, but adding the second card has required more system memory it seems. Crazy.

Why do i need two pagefiles? I'd rather not put it on the ssd as long as it wont affect performance.

Don't ever disable the pagefile mate. Honestly, no matter what any one tells you leave it alone.

The only gain is a bit of space back on your boot drive (handy with an ssd..) but there are other ways to do that (gain space) and do it more safely. Hiberfil.sys is one, disable the crappy system restore and use something decent like Acronis ETC.

I think ive done all the little tricks to save space on my ssd. If you all think its best ill put the pagefile on the ssd, but i dont want it using more than 2gb. However i have a 500gb momentus xt hybrid ssd drive, i could put the pagefile on that and make it system managed.

So long as your page file is 400MB or higher its fine. This is all thats required to keep windows errors etc but I wouldnt recomend this unless you use 16GB of RAM or above.

I think thats what it was set at, 400mb as i wanted windows to record any bsod messages, however thats not enough anymore. Its strange as it was fine for months till i added this second card.

The OutOfMemory exception occurs when any application (BF3 in this case) needs to load a blob file (aka game data) into a contiguous section of memory - but your memory is so fragmented that a contiguous section of the required size is not available.

Remember that memory is comprised of physical and virtual memory, this applies to both.

In this case, 400MB is a ridiculously small page file. Your first solution of setting it to system managed on your other drive is best. Although you may be able to get away with less, the recommended size for a page file on a 64bit system is 1.5xRAM.

Huh. Lesson learned. Ive moved the system managed page file to the other hard drive and the problem has stopped. Thank you good men.

It gives you a small amount of fast page file. It is memory at the end of the day. The other part is just so you can get enough.

This is what I use, and I have no problems.

I've just bought 16gb of Hyper x Blu. Will be interesting to see if i still get the out of memory message from bf3 with a pagefile disabled.

Will the extra 8gb be enough to cut it?

Or will bf3 still churn through endless resources lol?

I alt tab a lot so i guess that doesnt help.

If the crashing does come back, so will the pagefile. :D
