Battlefield Tours

The wife and I are booked into Normandy next year for the 75th Anniversary of D-Day.

We did a short D-Day tour in 2017 through BMW Motorcycle tours and had a great time as the Tour guide was an ex Infantry Major who taught military history for the Army before he retired.

As an Ex-RAF Police Dog Handler one of the graves that stood out for me was a young 17year old lad that jumped into France with his war dog, they were buried together after being killed on the first day.....

Prior to the attack a long line of allied soldiers are sat along the lane waiting to go. Sitting in the same spot, looking out at their target at the same time in the morning as them was quite moving.

On You Tube there is a film of Forensic Lip Readers putting words onto the original film.

That would be Pte. Emil Corteil with Glenn his dog. Sadly killed by the RAF in a tragic error, both buried in Ranville Cemetery.

Being a fan of the Sharpe books, I'd be tempted by one of the Napoleonic battlegrounds.

I'll have to introduce you to my brother in law

I did the D-Day one, might have even been with the same company in about 2005, really enjoyed it, I went to more places than what is listed on there though so they must have changed it. I went to Merville Battery, Bayeux Museum, and to St. Mere Eglise as well.

As I've already said, all of those tours cover extremely significant events during during the war but having thought about it I think I'd go for The "Commando Operations" tour. They did some remarkable raids - really crazy stuff.

Edit: here's a good documentary of one of them, the raid on St. Nazaire. (Stick with it if you don't like Clarkson, it's worth it.)

Yep they are great places we also added on a visit to the site of Easy Company's attack on the German Guns, and then just down the road is a full on monument to Dick Winters.
