Bought this a few days ago. Very good game and well worth buying. Never played Battlestation's Midway so do not know how they compare. Game is a mixture of simulation, tactical & arcade blast. You also get to control/fly planes as well as control ships + subs + land bases. Most missions (there are around 28 single player as US or Japanese) involve all 3-4 vehicle types and because the game is technically sound you get zero lag swapping between them either which is nice to experience for once on the PC. Loading times also deserve a special mention as they are very fast indeed. Never more than 15-20 secs and ingame there is little to none. FPS are also very good it lags ever so slightly @ 1920x1200 with 4xAA and max gfx when there is a lot of onscreen action at once. Overall its technicaly solid which in itself is rare for recent PC games!!!

The planes also handle with some realism and are easy to stall plus crashing into objects does exactly what you expect (no HAWX fantasy physics here!!). Controls are basic and arcade like but as the handling is good and realistic I can live with that. They do something different with the weapons as you can chose a certain loadout and when you use all your ammo up can either wait for the ammo to regenerate or switch to another plane in your squadron or land at the base and re-arm. In the missions if you complete the secondary goals it unlocks bonus planes/ships with stronger firepower etc etc.

This supports the wired & wireless X360 controllers although other gamepads should be fine or you can fully configure the keyboard + mouse instead.

Gfx are not totally amazing but they do work well and as the FPS with max gfx are so high (unlike HAWX) give an effective impression of the 1941 era combat. Clouds especially are well done and flying through them is pretty effective (with no slowdowns either!). Water gfx are also quite strong and they have even put underwater details like coral reefs in there

Not tried the multiplayer yet but as its a Games For Windows LIVE title it also has achievements which can be earned and added to your existing gamertag (X360 or PC). No cross platform play however as apparently PC gamers have unfair technical advantages which is why you see so few vs X360 titles!! If, however you do not want any of the LIVE features it can be played without LIVE but then you will not earn Achievements or be able to play multiplayer.

DRM is a very basic disc check only it contain's no online authentication although you need to enter the supplied LIVE access key if you wish to play online via LIVE servers.

Install takes about 25 mins even though its only 6.3GB as it uses some new DVD-Rom protection which takes ages (about 10 mins) to scan the game DVD before the install actually begins.

Overall I think this game is an absolute gem and technically for once PC gets a solid port which also looks much better than the X360 version. If you remember some of the intense battles from the movie Pearl Harbour then this game recreates some of those very well :D

Played the demo, didnt think much of it at all.
Going by the demo:

Pro's
interesting missions
good music and sound effects

cons:
average graphics
very hard to control, especially the planes, i must have crashed about 40 planes.
really bad damage physics, what i mean is when you shoot certain parts of a building it doesnt show. Its like its just got a healthbar, waiting for you to zap down:p

Demo is widely acknowledged as being unpolished & buggy as its a much earlier build. Unwise to base your decision on that alone and silly of Eidos to not release a more polished demo.

Controls are very easy and fully adjustable as well. Planes are very easy to fly but it takes time to get used them although you can reverse all the axis if those bother you. As they are older planes you have to allow more time to control them as unlike jets they do not turn instantly. I found the controls to be childlike easy after a few minutes but the full game does come with a full tutorial which explains everything.

Yeah physics are not really present as it's more of an arcade game with sim elements so unrealistic in that respect. At least the planes handle the way you would expect 68 year old planes too!! (unlike HAWX where they are all the exact same)!

Look on the bright side at least Eidos want to support the PC when a lot of others are abandoning it!!

I am interested in this.

Was going to pre-order on STEAM to get Midway for free but didnt bother in the end :(

From those screenies, the art style seems nice.

Will try the demo.

If its anything like the 360 version its awful, usual case of eye candy and basic gameplay. It didnt inspire me to try the PC demo as its fundemental flaw is weak gameplay ..

im sure some might find it fun, somehow

Already posted my thoughts on this in the other thread...

It's a good game but not the dynamic strategy fest the box would have you believe. In addition I'm now finding lack of checkpoints or ability to save as you play a major handicap. I finally cracked the first part of the second(?) US mission where you need to sink the Junyo. However the second part puts you back in a destroyer and tasks you with various surface operations. Unfortunately 40 mins I realised I had neglected to protect the USS Enterprise and "Game Over" again. You should be able to save and resume at reasonable intervals.

And if the campaign was dynamic, then the next mission would follow but adjusted to reflect the resources lost in the previous one. I mean the likes of Tornado or EF2000 was doing that sort of thing 12 - 15 years ago, so why is it that hard to do so in contemporary games? Why does there always have to be a fixed mission path? Even the WC games, albeit scripted still had branching paths and different missions depending whether you were on the winning, losing or second chance paths.

Sorry for rant but to me that's the depth which separates a PC game from a console blastfest.

Graphics and sound are good though...
