Bayonetta

to be honest hack and slash games are pretty boring and repetitive

They are if you hack and slash, which entirely misses the point. They offer far more than just the spectacle of crazy fights vs. huge monsters - although that's a big part of the attraction - and have a considerable learning curve and great deal of depth. But yeah, you can button mash on easy settings if you choose :p

Edge say 10/10

'Bayonetta is nearly flawless. We're not talking about the witch herself, though that's also true. Bayonetta is the kind of game you dream of playing, the kind of game every platform needs, and the kind of game any developer with ambition would fantasise about having on their CV. From start to finish its intricate and intuitive fighting system is a masterclass, and it even finds time to reclaim vehicle levels. This is about as good as it gets.'

Again you don't know that all of the combos are available yet, you also don't know how enemies will adapt to button mashing later in the game. You could argue that in DMC4 the first level or two are simple button mashing affairs but in the higher difficulties against tougher enemies it's anything but that, every move must be meticulously planned and executed. I anticipate this game to evolve heavily as you progress, i also expect the higher difficulties to prove a great challenge, it's not uncommon for an average game to get a couple of good reviews but this is getting so many gushing reviews there's obviously a lot more to expect from it.

Agreed. It bugs me when people criticise games of this type for being button mashers. Any fighter can be button mashed - DMC, GoW, Tekken, SF etc. You'll be crap and the game and won't begin to scratch the surface of the combat system, but you can button mash.

Tried the demo on the 360. Thought it was amazing - so much imagination gone into this game and the artwork and music/sound effects were first class.
Can't wait to pick this up on the 8th Jan now :)

Agreed. Technically the game is excellent. Animation is superb and gameplay is smooth as butter. I suspect the fighting system is going to slap DMC and GoW intp touch too, but will have to get hold of the full game to judge.
