I can appreciate the internet can be slower in th evenings. However, currently my one download is zooming along at a whopping 3k/sec - on my 8mb connection. I had faster downloads on my old 56k connection. Do other companies go this slow in the evenings? It was never this bad before.

Using Virgin 8mb ADSL, wireless connection to my PC (54mbps & very good signal) and I am only a few hundred meters from my exchange.

Rather than the headline speed, what does your modem say it's connected at?
Generally speaking you'll see some slowdown at peak times, but that much is a sign of significant overloading (and that's hardly unknown for Virgin Media, especially their ADSL).

There is a different between "some slowdown" because of "significant overloading" and 3k/sec! There is something seriously wrong there!

I didn't say "some slowdown" meant 3kB/s. "Significant overloading" probably does though given how tightly packed Virgin ADSL is...

While we're at it, try with a cable, and post the ADSL stats the router should give.

UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps

Just downloading now; started off between 100-450k/sec and seems to be settling around 100k/sec. Usually bang on midnight, full speeds resumes (800k/sec)

Doing it again - 5.5k/sec

Virgin must have just got worse, as the times I would expect it to do 800k/sec have changed.
