BBC iPlayer app for Android - no HD option?

Hi all

I've just got a tablet and installed the iPlayer app pretty quickly. However the quality is poor, and unlike on the web version, there doesn't seem to be a way to select HD quality programmes. Also the available channels are 1,2, etc. rather than 1, 1HD, 2HD, etc.

What am I missing? Surely the Android app supports HD? I'm fairly sure it used to, and I'm also fairly sure it didn't used to make me download a separate media player?!

Cheers.

IPlayer on android is terrible recently. It gets worse with each version.

But have you tried enabling higher quality downloads in settings?

It does, as far as I know it picks the quality automatically. It starts off low quality and then when it detects the connection speed it ramps up to HD after a few seconds. A bit annoying but there's not really anyway around it. I notice the problem too when I chromecast from iPlayer too...

That doesn't help me though does it? Plenty of people having similar problems on g3 and lollipop.

Might've been a Lollipop problem but if it's only G3 users having similar problems then not sure what could've caused it apart from LG's modifications to Android.

The only thing I could find in settings was this:

...but that relates to downloaded files, not streaming (and was ticked anyway).

I've just looked and observed exactly that behaviour. I didn't notice it first time as I was just setting it up for my kids, but now you've mentioned it I can see that it changes to HD automatically. Very ghetto that it begins in SD though, it's also accompanied with a bit of a stutter as it changes to the higher resolution.

I didn't quite follow the bit about releasing an html version, but that article is from 2012 and they still have a two app solution to the problem? Guess that means it's here to stay for a while.

id love to know what dribbling fools design this software, the obvious thing to do in my mind is let you choose "high quality", then say "your connection is too slow would you like to buffer the programme for X mins"

also when I pause a program WHY DOES IT NOT CONTINUE TO DOWNLOAD IN THE BACKGROUND...

i7, 16gb ram, 1gb LAN, 100mb internet... HQ iplayer still bufferes from time to time... IF I COULD JUST PAUSE IT FOR 10MINS and have it buffer so no pauses it would make my life 0.0001% better
