simple one this, is iplayer dead in the water and the bbc have just given up on ever trying to up the quality ?

i know they are testing 4k, and have been for years now but the iplayer itself is still only pumping out glorious 720p, to me it seems they still only want people viewing things on the tv and nothing else in 4k, or even 1080.

even checking out BBC news on youtube it seems 1080/24 is king, apart from the 720/50 stuff Oo

so as a platform is it dead in the water as far as development now.

Works perfectly fine for my uses. There’s some slight clunkiness to the interface but no worse than other services or my TV’s OS.

I don’t notice the resolution difference if it is only 720p. Some services like Sky / Now TV charge you for HD.
the bbc could have a yearly charge for that, they are missing a trick it seems.

Your TV helps the PQ a lot. Newer TV’s like OLED’s and QLED’s usually have excellent 4k upscaling abilities. I watch masterchef on iPlayer and the quality is fantastic. The sharpness and colour really pop.

the thing is im not sure exactly what iplayer on tv outputs, im talking purely on the website.

as for the archives who knows why they dont throw it all up, could be paranoia on bandwidth costs or something else. with how the bbc is run they probably have someone burning dvd's in a little cupboard under the stairs to sell on ebay.

Roku app's been providing HLG 4k versions of attenborough and doctor who ... what more does the average woke viewer need to be happy....

maybe they will deliver some 4k/hld coverage of the upcoming commonwealth games or world cup
... be it due to covid ? that was a disappointment from both the winter and summer olympics, where even the americans/nbc too, had negligible 4k material.
commonwealth doesn't really have a quorate set of athletes though.
the bbc recorded the 2012 Olympics in 4k, they made a big thing about it being a test, it was even a partnership with nhk (japanese state broadcaster) showing what could be done then, now we are a decade later and still only limited 4k viewing options from the supposed national broadcaster.

but the iplayer website is what i dont get, with all the 4k content they have and they must be recording at least in 1080 for everything they shoot now why is it still so poor, as i said the youtube channel is just as bad if not worse with 1080/24 and 720/50, because god only knows why. its like they are either paranoid over someone stealing high quality content (which they dont sell) or have some strange view that because its not black and white 320p its good quality.

as for the idiocy being posted, go take it to general discussion or the onion will you.

i think a few (and probably my fault) getting mixed up, im talking about the iplayer online not the tv app, the apps bad agreed, but the online website one you use through you're pc.

and yes itv c4 and the rest of them are horrendous, extremely poor quality and adverts everywhere let alone the clunky feel of them all.

but as i was saying about quality, take topgear whether you like it or not it should be in 4k to show off the cars, but no, cant do that. meanwhile on youtube you have free content being put out by guys in 4k even real car people. jonny smith for example, formally of fifth gear doing stuff.

So how does that relate to the iPlayer being "dead in the water"?
because it is ? its like the bbc has gotten it to where it is and said "right it works, that will do"

as for topgear not being filmed in 4k id say thats wrong as they have 4k content on youtube. so they have the equipment so must be down to the bbc not wanting 4k content then im guessing, again to say its the national broadcaster which we pay for its rather poor.
