BBC license fee proposals...

No they haven't, and no it wasn't.
It was a civil offense, and people were only imprisoned for not paying the court ordered fine they got.
But no one has ever been sent down for not paying the BBC.

You were right about one thing though, the BBC are definitely responsible for brainwashing British society.

I think you will find it is an offence under section 363 the Communications Act 2003.

Many people have been jailed for non-payment of the fine imposed.

Not that simple, even if you decide to not watch BBC programming, this can neither be proved or disproved leading to all sorts of trouble, i.e. visits from enforcers, letters... you name.

Whoever knocks at your door, put your shoes on and follow them.

If they get in a car, take a picture of the license plate.

If they ask what you are doing, tell them you are going to follow them home so you can see what family they have.

This thread just gets more and more bizarre.

What are you on about? Most if not all of us are not evading the free when we should be paying. There is no justification for evading going on.

Spot on.

We've all had varying degrees of good/bad experiences with TVL and we're simply discussing the enforcement, not avoiding the fee.

George...would you pay car tax if you didn't drive a car?

I noticed yesterday that you can't use channel 4's catchup service without a account now. I like shows like amazing spaces and grand designs and usually just watch them on their catchup service on my smart tv. I tried yesterday and now you need to sign in to a account. Sorry but I am not giving them my email address so that's the end of that.

You some sort of Patriot?

What other nation pays a TV tax, i mean it basically is considering all the propaganda that your a criminal/traitor/heathen for not paying.

"The Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago[2] notes that two-thirds of the countries in Europe and half of the countries in Asia and Africa use television licences to fund public television."

Plenty of other nations.

Well with Brexit, Europe doesnt matter anymore and Asia and Africa arent relevent to anything... /s :(

Most of Europe via one means or another, either a dedicated tax (such as the UK) a levy based upon the household, or on top of a utility bill.
The only oddity is that we have any form of opt out that can be used whilst still owning a TV set, some have no opt out others require you to fill in a legal form and IIRC lying on it is seen in as lying to a court as it's a legal statement (rather like if you say your wife was driving when you get a speeding ticket, but you were driving).

IIRC France requires you to affirm that you don't own a TV set to "opt out", and I think they also impose a radio levy based on if you've got an in car radio.

Most first world countries have some form of public broadcaster, usually paid for either via some form of specific tax, or out of general taxation. Even the US has PBS which whilst woefully underfunded is partly paid for by the government via various methods (mainly foundations for the arts and broadcasting), partly by member stations, and partly by donations, I think some areas also effectively part fund it through local taxation.

Unless its changed within the past few days you can still use the channel 4 catchup app without an account. The app also skips adverts for some reason.

Why not? An email address is hardly ultra precious? If you're worried about spam just setup a Gmail account for that sort of nonsense.

Because I don't want to give them it. It's my choice. I don't give my details out unless it's absolutely necessary. None of these companies can be trusted with our information.

Nope, tells me I can't watch the programmes without signing in. Could it be something to do with the new TV Licensing law because it wasn't like this before?
