This has only happened in the last week or so. If I'm on the Beeb's home page and I want to use the browser's back button to go back to my own homepage, it simply refreshes the Beeb page. It's like it has 'trapped' the back button preventing the browser from leaving the site. This affects both desktop and mobile browsers. Any workarounds for this? A very small number of other sites do this by design, but for the Beeb to do this too I consider as bad PR.

On a side note - does anyone get annoyed with the constant "breaking" pop-up? The same "breaking" that comes up 3 times during a reading session? Then clicking the X takes you back to the top of the page so that you lose your position on the story that you were reading? No probs - just stick polling.bbc.co.uk into the HOSTs file :-)

Thanks for confirming guys. I tried Opera and Chrome too and the back button works fine on those. Just Firefox is affected then by the Beeb's update.

Disclaimer - I refuse to test it with Internet Exploder because it's the most outdated browser ever and it has more holes than a golf course. Granted there's Edge, but I feel that MS have missed the boat with Edge as everyone just uses Chrome, Firefox, Opera or Safari these days.

I use Firefox exclusively and I've never had that problem.

edit: tried just now and I do. :o

If you right click the back button, they've inserted a page that redirects from bbc.co.uk/news to bbc.co.uk/news/0 so everytime you hit back, you get to bbc.co.uk/news and it redirects to bbc.co.uk/news/0

That theme is awful.

Possibly the theme has become corrupted thus causing the back button problem. Can be the only explanation for why it looks so bad too.

OP I suggest you reinstall your Windows and not install this theme.

Cheers for confirming the same issue as me. The other posters on here thinks that I have a theme but I don't. I just have a custom userChrome.css file with a few tweaks in there e.g. remove the scroll bars for more screen real estate. The purple colour is just the OS-wide colour. When I got the PC 2 years ago, it asked for my name, country, keyboard layout etc. You can choose the colour too and I just left it as whatever it picked. Red car or blue car? Big deal :p

Plus, I have Firefox on my phone too (no theme on that either) and it does the same as desktop on the Beeb's site.

Those fonts man, are you on Babylon 5 right now?

I think it's called Handel Gothic. Anyone interested - search for HandelGotDBol on the net.

Thank you for providing me with a screenshot of where the back button is. I would never have known about it otherwise.

Looking at your forward button your theme seems to have corrupted most of the ui with the font being so big.

I'd love to see how far this corruption has spread through his OS. Preferably before he reinstalls Windows.
