Dunno if anyone has seen this, or mentioned it in another thread but the BBC has a poll up on it's website about the recent PS3 non-price reduction.

Basically it asks would you:

A. Prefer a cheaper PS3
B. Free controller & Games.

So far from around 50,000 votes only 17% of people want the free stuff, looks like the marketing team at Sony should sacked and instead pay BBC for researching tactics.

Linky to poll here

No surprise there, people will always prefer a lower take home price over value.

It's all about perception, when you're talking about hundreds of pounds for a console, the question people will ask is 'what's the minimum amount I can own x console for'.

Even with the extra value of the games bundled with the PS3, you're still being forced to pay a huge price to own it.

If the pricedrop was of equivalenmt value then yes. However, they do value added packages as they can add more than a respective price drop for less cost to them - ie they add 2 games and a pad, which cost to them a couple of quid, but to the conmsumer would cost £70+.......therefore the consumer perception is that they're getting far more value than they actually are!

I don;t really understand why Sony are adopting two different price drop strategies. Its almost as if they don't want to shift consoles in Europe!

Because they are arrogant and think the European market is a dead cert IMO.

Edit: Thats not even mentioning the Playstation 2 back compatibility European issues!

Or that the PS3 has been out in America for 8 months and 3 in the EU, yet the EU want a price drop too?

Things get even more daft. The 60gb SKU which has just recieved a $100 price cut in America is to be phased out and replaced by a version with an 80gb HDD, this will retail at the original price of $599 (And won't include the PS2 emotion engine in line with the European consoles).

So effectively once the stock runs out there will be no price cut even in the US.

The decisions Sony make continue to baffle me.

I still sense that the real price cut is yet to come. They may be waiting to shift all the 60Gb models from the shelves before cutting the price in the states. Otherwise no one will by the 60Gb models over the 80Gb ones.

Oddly enough the sales in Europe have been quite good, but if they want to win Christmas they will need to drop the price before hand. Maybe they are waiting to see if Home helps them out when its released. :D

Well considering the European ps3 is WELL above the American price AND contains less features and hasn't sold as well as expected in the UK I don't think its unreasonable for us to ask for a price cut no matter how long its being of the shelfs.

This generation is so different from any other because the two main consoles are almost exactly the same spec and game wise. Given another year there will still be relatively little difference between the two.

That's possible and wouldn't surprise me the way Sony seem to do things these days.

I'd be interested in the reaction of the people who bought what they thought was the cheaper 60gb version just before the price cut, only for the 80gb version to have it's price slashed a week later.

What is the crack with the european PS3 playing PS2 games?
It plays them by software emulation (Same as the 360). So while not all work, any that don't work can potentially be fixed with a patch (as some have already been).

The big fuss over this issue is that the American version of the PS3 has the PS2 chip built in so it doesn't use software emulation and supports more titles. The decision was made to remove the PS2 chip from the European consoles quite late on, which annoyed a lot of people considering Sony had made a big deal of not using software emulation. The US PS3 will soon not have the PS2 chip built in either, so before long all versions of the PS3 will use software emulation.

Dont forget the US price isnt $500 dollars as it does not include taxes, so the UK price would be £350. Still more but dont forget the strength of the Pound, shipping costs, import duty and the fact that the UK average wage is about 30-40% more than the US. I dont think selling over 1.1 million consoles in about 4 months is that bad, probably better than any other region.

Ok, so you are saying because we currently have a stong economy vs. the U.S our price should be higher? I think you got that the wrong way around, the price should be lower because of this.

What I have been told is that with the pound is so high, the import costs for the US, ie bringing goods from the US to the UK is more, for example if they have to pay £20 import tax per console a while ago that would only be $30 now its close to $40, so we as the UK have to pay the difference. I know what you mean though it doesnt make sense but thats the economy for you.

That would be the case if they were manufactured in the US but they are not. I think they are made in Japan and China.

I may be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure all PS3's are manufactured in Japan and China, in which case bulk shipping costs to US and UK wouldn't be too dissimilar (on a per console basis), and you should be comparing strength of the £/$ to Yen instead of each other, as I'm pretty sure that's what Sony account in!
Also, to bring average wage into the equation, does that mean people in Albania/Spain/Italy etc should be paying even less than the US? That's a bit of a bizarre arguement imo!

It's the mentality of people to get stuff a lot cheaper then add one game they really want rather than being lumped with what Sony say you can have.
