BBC standing up to scientology

Who cares? Can't 'we' just leave them alone. I don't see why people (or the BBC) go out to seemingly delibrately upset people about their religion. Obviously in return they should leave 'us' alone - stop trying to convert people to their religion when they don't really want to.

As far as I'm concerned *every* religion is a bit of a cult... it's just that most of the more established ones are so damn old now that nobody really remembers who wrote the texts in the first place :p

IMO of course.

Cool.

I also heard briefly that there would be a special report on why Islam, asian and white would never mix in the Uk....I belive it was gonna be screened on a bbc channel.

We need more of this tbh.

Scientology is a cult - pure and simple, please don't try and compare it with other organised religions, it just makes you look ignorant. Personally if it were up to me I'd ban all films starring scientologists. Start a war on scientology.

There was a newsnight or Parorama report about non mixing last week or the week before last - you should be able to find and watch it on the bbc website.:) Incidentally it didnt say that we would never mix, it says just that we arent mixing in certain cities.

I care, and a lot of other people do. The only reason this video upsets them is because it reveals the shady things about them that they don't want people to know. Without investigative reporting people wouldn't know how dangerous this bogus cult is.

No it does not make me look ignorant. Who's to say Christianity wasn't viewed as a cult when it was made up?

Oh of course, it wasn't made up was it? Rolleyes not for you particularly, just my disillusion with religion and its followers.

John Sweeney's outburst was quite incredible. I wonder if the BBC will put it into context on Panorama

What this clip shows is that even an experienced, professional journalist can completely lose the plot and that with a bit of editing, this can make anything he says on a particular subject totally unconvincing.

By the same token, exactly the opposite can (and almost certainly does) happen – i.e. Journalists producing a report rubbishing someone or something by means careful editing and quoting out of context.

Still, Panorama on Monday 14th should be well worth watching.

One mans religion is another mans cult. As to not comparing the two, both rely on revealed knowledge to explain the meaning and origin of life and to set rules which its adherents must comply with. The only real differences between the two that I see are:
  • age, one is much older than the other
  • one freely gives away what the other sells

Sounds like a good plan, but why stop just at "films starring scientologists"?

Surely there are good reasons to ban all films that come out of Hollywood?

Can you ever be sure that none of the actors are Scientologists?

Everyone should realise that this is NOT a religion, it is a cult or at best "a business enterprise".

I like how they (the scientologists) are obviously not allowed to enter into any dicussion with the reporters on the street. They crowd and attack, shouting down any reporter and insisting that they look like a pedophile and have commited crimes. Most comically insisting that the reporter must have something to hide!!!

The closest comparision I can think of for scientology is the pre war nazi party.

I think the problem is famous people who are openly scientologists. I wonder how many people have become scientologists as a result of hero worshipping Tom Cruise, John Travolta et al? And thats exactly why high profile celebrities are targetted for recruitment by the cult (and despite what the sheep here think - it is a cult, not a religion).

And that is one helluva difference. What sort of religion doesn't tell you what its message is unless you donate $100k? The answer is a sick, money-grabbing cult.

Posting this on youtube is a bit of a silly thing for them to do. Surely the publicity will just mean that more people watch panorama tomorrow eve. If people like myself didn't know it was on they certainly do now. Also, if anything its evidence of the underhand tactics used by scientology, if they'd just released a statement through the usual mediums it would have been more dignified.

As much as I disagree with all religions these guys are worse.

Indirectly and directly killing people, charging £100,000's to learn the origin of the religion and to be saved, giving preferential treatment to celebrities, committing crimes, harassing people, outright lies, etc.

Most other religions have these factors but these guys are higher up the scale.

Tell me any other religion or group of believers that require money to share their knowledge, the need to 'pay up' before you learn.

Go to a priest and he will gladly tell you all you wish to know. Go to a Rabbi and he will gladly sit and tell you everything there is to know about his religion. etc etc

Sit down with someone from the Scientology church and they will ask you how much money you've got.

Yep its totally backfired on them and they've completely misjudged the intelligence of the British public (well of those who know what panorama is at least). It's immediatly obvious to anyone that the clip has been cut to just show the guy shouting and that he's obviously put up with a lot of crap. Interviewing someone who just repeats the same old lines that bare no resembleance to an answer must be extremely frustrating.

Its a shame the show isn't going to be televised here :(

It's just got cult written all over it.

L Ron. Hubbard and another Sci-fi author basically sat down and decided to have a competition to see who could come up with a story and turn it into a religion, L Ron obviously managed to do it! But then who in their right mind would believe the story, really hope this program reveals a lot of things as not a lot of people know the story behind Scientology.

Also if you want a film version of the story go and watch Battlefield Earth, what a load of ***** that film is!

edit/ I remember there was a story in the news about Tom Cruise asking Scarlett Johanson out for a date but when they were in the restaurant a load of people just came out of no where and they and Tom tried to make her join the religion, I mean wtf!

They are taking advantage of the fact that people nowadays look upto celebrities and treat them like idols/gods. Having a Scientologist exhibition on Hollywood Boulevard doesn't help either.
