I am using Peer Guardian and had it open whilst opening up my brwoser and one of the IPs repeatedly coming up is labled BBC.

BBC xxx.xxx.x.x:xxxx 212.58.226.8:80 TCP

I don't dowload illegal stuff, the only thing I can think of is the fact I don't have TV. The internet is my entertainment. I have been shredding all the letters from TV Licensing as they are just junk mail.

Start Rant (skip if you wish)

I opened one recently and it said it was a final warning they are gonna come investigate... whatever, I don't have tv so why should I worry? If they want to waste paper and waste time fine, but I;m not going to waste my time waiting to get through to them on the phone nor can I be bothered to write them a letter stating I don't have a TV. Really why should they assume I can;t live with out TV when all there is is utter crap on?

End Rant

Any way... so do you think its possible they are checking out what I'm doing? And if so is what they are doing illegal?

Nope no iPlayer installed although I signed up for Beta just never bothered with it cos I thought afterwards 'Why am I signing up for something I don't want?'. TV still some what has a hold on me... like if I go round a mates house and its on, I find myself drawn to it :D been with out TV for about 3-4 years!

As for the warrent, they better have a copper with them if they do come to my door otherwise they are not getting in. Why should I have to let them into my house because they assume I can't live with out TV, its so absurd, almost like the luddy mafia or something.

So you recon they aren't checking me out?

I have a TV and a Licence and I still get mail addressed to the previous ocupants of my flat informing them of their impending court appearance etc. Phoned the TV Licening people a few times now to tell them that they dont live here anymore, hasn't seemed to make any difference.

I wouldn't get too worried about them if I were you, a few of my friends don't have TV's and still get their junk mail but nothings ever happened.

of course not. how are they supposed to link up your home address with your ip? not possible.

but just to be on the safe side, it might be worth getting your tinfoil out. :D

You people can find a picture for anything.

I thought it was possible to track where you live via IP as long as its static. Though you should be able to at least find out roughly where they live.

Also to see if you have a tv dont they sit outside your house with detectors to check for radio waves from a tv etc.

How can where you live be tracked from IP when the IP's are allocated from the ISP? The ISP could be anywhere and you will get an IP based on their range which surely would be traced back to them....

ok maybe i phrased my last post wrongly. apologies for the confusion. what i should have said is that tv licensing has nothing whatsoever to with your ip address/internet usage/isp. the exchange of details between isp and tv licensing/the bbc will never happen. they are not related in anyway. are the dvla going to chase car tax dodgers in the same way?

as for tv detector vans? lol :D

these are standard letters that get sent out whenever you are not licenced with them, don't pay any attention, everyone who privately rents accomodation will probably be familiar with this.

There is, I think a small (and likely pretty much completely unenforceable) rule in the licensing law that using BBC stuff online requires TV license. Cant remember where i got it from but im sure it applies.
Think I read it as there was minor uproar that other countries can obviously use it without paying a dime but we have to as brits.

nope, that just isn't true. you don't have to pay a penny to use bbc online. it's strictly for receiving tv signals. even tv owners who don't use their sets to receive signals (dvd/console only users for example) don't have to pay. you're supposed to write and let them know. :)

More likely you're opening a site which had a link or something to the bbc site, as port 80 is http it would be reasonable!

Got any addons for firefox that could be going to the bbc?

Check who is trying to make a connection to who, if your pc is the source ip with bbc as the destination then it is firefox or some app trying to make the connection.
