BBM to launch on Android and iOS

not hating on blackberry at all, i used to love my old one because of the free messages, me and an ex had them, saved me a fortune! Then thousands of free texts became the norm so changed phones...

I thing it's a good move and not too late either. It wasn't that long ago that Facebook released a dedicated messenger app, and google is set to release a new IM app too, so there is definitely still something to play for.

There's no mention of encryption. Isn't that was BBM was/is famed for?

crazy move from RIM - BBM was pretty much the only unique thing left about blackberry, and its tight integration with the OS set it appart from the competition but if they are going to start giving it away whats the point in Blackberry OS now?

Wave bye bye to the younger BB users. :D

Mind the super-sensitive fanboi!

Watch out guys, we have a badass here;)

And hardly super sensitive fella, i just dont necessarily hate on any device..something you should learn to do but your probably far too immature to do such a thing;).

Tbh i felt the same way when i first heard about it, thought thats the end of BB as we know it but after reading around a bit more about why they have done or speculation as to why they have done it...i think its a brilliant idea to make it cross platform...if anything it will hopefully get people talking about Blackberry again.

They should have done this years ago tbh but i suppose it wasnt possible but now with the new OS...its probably going to be easier to do this.

I though BBM was separate from normal data usage - so it makes sense to carry on purchasing Blackberrys if your plan does not include any decent data allowance (I'm aware that would defeat the point of a Blackberry but that's how most kids use them).

Too late, 3 years ago I would have paid serious money to have BB on my iOS/Android and so most of my friends, no I don't even know a single person on BBM. We all use Whatsapp, with a few using FB messenger. I really don't see any room for it, back when everyone was on BB or switching from BB it would have been huge but now it just Meh.

Also if you have to pay the £5 extra on your contract I really don't see it taking off at all.

Huge desperation by BB. The fact that its going to be free on Android/iOS when BB users have to pay extra for Blackberry Services will surely mean a lot of current users ditching their BB hardware in favour of a more superior device with free BBM?

WhatsApp will still be king.

Looks like this thread may turn into an "SMS v IM" debate. I am a heavy WhatsApp user. On the rare ocassion I send an SMS, I feel like im using stoneage technology. I know how ridiculous that sounds and I have no explanation for it :D.

BBM has become more and more redundant as years have gone by. It's nice to have this as an option though especially if you communicate with a lot of people who are still on BlackBerry's; but don't want one yourself and would prefer an iPhone/Android phone.

I'd have to say it's probably desperation on the part of BlackBerry, but it's hard to say.

As for SMS vs BBM/Whatsapp/iMessage/Viber etc, the data based IM services are far better as they can show instant delivery/read reports etc, they tend to be more reliable as well in my experience.

Loads of schoolgirls will ditch their cheap/hand me down BB's and get on the Android train now, my gf's daughter will, I agree it's good for the consumer and a bit desperate of BB.

Having seen what they charge the carriers per handset they should try selling direct at a similar price point like Google and the Nexus line.

I wonder if BB will end up, ironically, as a high end app supplier to Android, hey it's a living.

You see constructive criticism as hate because you're a super-sensitive fanboi. Thanks for proving my point & please continue to egg people on. :D

Stop talking out of backside;)...you add nothing to the conversation with your snide comments. As for egging on??, the only person that seems to be doing that is you. Constructive criticism?? hahaha yeh ok, nothing you have ever said regarding BB is constructive criticism.

Anyhow keep trolling away fella, its all good:p

Still no one has mentioned security.

Won't this help those in the middle east and other countries who organising rebel movements and demonstrations using IM tools that might be less secure than BBM.
