BBM to launch on Android and iOS

As popular as WhatsApp is, only about 1/4 of my contacts use it.

I don't think SMS will ever die, especially as most contracts these days are giving away unlimited.

Cross platform chat war stepping up, I'll be interested to see where it goes with BBM and more than likely Google Babel coming out imminently.

I use text as I know the other person will get the message. Who doesn't have unlimited texts now?

The industry is actually betting you'll move to Joyn over another platform once it starts being installed on all phones (Q3) in europe but i have my reservations on this.

BBM crypto is actually compromised in a few countries (UAE, India etc...) RIM gave them the key to allow MITM attacks but otherwise they are "apparently" still secure. I say apparently as you generate your own key pair with BES (between the BES enterprise server and the user handset) but in theory there are ways to compromise this which it's likely western governments have, if they aren't quite so willing to admit to publicly like India etc...

that said. BB is still the best for enterprises who want security. Things like Intranet (well, native VPN) support and still not great on Android/iOS although KNOX looks pretty awesome and might start to rival it if other countries start signing off on it.

I know quite a few of my friends who've tired Whatsapp. Some use it occasionally, other think its a pile of ....

Those I know who use BBM love it.

Myshra, well BB10 doesn't use BES. So presumably there is no security at all then? As for joyn no doubt the networks will find away to charge you for using it to send files and images etc..

Multimedia messaging isn't free though. Looking at my WhatsApp Images folder I can see that it's got 1757 images in there and the video folder has 65. That's a lot of multimedia content sent and received over WhatsApp and over text that would have cost a lot of money - Also not possible in most cases due to lack of group chat in the same way BBM/WhatsApp allows.

Whatsapp is very good. Group chat saves me having to sent loads of people the same msg e.g. one group I have is for footy, and we all confirm within the group who is and isn't able to play. If friends/family are ever abroad it's easy to stay in touch and send unlimited pics over for free. I use to know people on BBM but almost all are now on Whatsapp.
