Hi guys,

Every time I go to the pub, I have smothered chicken (sometimes called hunters chicken, or chicken melt). I know it's not too healthy, but I have it mostly as a treat. I love it. Basically, it's chicken, BBQ sauce, cheese and bacon.

However, I can't seem to recreate it at home - the BBQ sauce is never right. I've tried pretty much all the ones on the shelf at tesco. I wish I was kidding. Does anybody know what sauce they use? There are differences between the pubs, but the sauce is always better than the supermarket offering.

Any insider pub secrets? :D

Many thanks :)

(PS BBQ is better than any of that other rubbish; ketchup, daddies and mayo inclusive) :D

Heinz BBQ sauce at Whitbread pubs. My wife works there, so I just asked her.

I'm sure that I've tried that one, but will be glad to try again. Thankyou. I'm beginning to wonder whether it's a cash-and-carry type of Heinz, rather than the supermarket style. Again, thanks for asking.

My favourite BBQ sauce is Cattleman's. It is so awesome, just cannot find it anywhere any more. I have tried the usual suspects as well, Heinz, HP, JD etc but none of them measure up to it.

Reggae Reggae jerk/bar b q sauce with some honey mixed in i use.

My BBQ sauce is
1 onion
1 can chopped tomatoes
4 tablespoons dark brown sugar
4 tablespoons vinegar ( I use red wine vinegar but doesn't make much diffrence)
4 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons worcster sauce
1 tablespoon treacle

finely chop onion and sweat in pan, chuck rest in and reduce. Either leave lumpy or blend.

Strange, I always assumed that BBQ sauce would at some point have an ingredient that included BBQ?

Like 2 * Freshly picked BBQ seeds. Wierd.
