BBS files for bankruptcy

I guess that's what happens when you make a luxury item, in times like these people can't justify it and they've never been cheap.

First I've heard of it though, I guess this has happened before?

Is this not becoming a semi-regular occurance for BBS?

Ah... I see now, after reading the broken article again I spotted "BBS was four years has passed already in bankruptcy." so they went bankrupt 4 years ago by the sounds of it.

In some ways I wonder if BBS are a victim of their own popularity.

The wheels are quite expensive and so still demand a high premium on the second hand market. This also means that it makes financial sense to keep refurbishing them where as other wheels get to the point where you might as well bin them and buy a new set.

None of the above equates to maximising sales of new wheels but does build up a fan base that trade them between themselves.

Surely they're not that just a niché for the off the shelf products only? I haven't read the article as I'm at work and it's in broken english but they don't just make off the shelf wheels do they? I assumed they make wheels for standard car manufacturers as well as the racing side of things like F1 and GT cars.

It's only BBS Germany though is it not?

All the BBS forged wheels like the LM's, RSGT's etc have been made by a partner (though independant) company in Japan for years and BBS USA is unaffected I think.

I suspect there is only a very small market for 3 grand sets of wheels.

I think something like 70% of BBS GmbH's business was for the OEM market.

Not all the BBS wheel sets had a high end price tag - not long ago I purchased a set of 18" RX alloys for around £900 - far cheaper than buying original 17" factory replacements.

I thought BBS did most of their business supplying the motor racing industry. Guess it depends which part of the company we are talking about.

They do make good wheels though.
