These are something im looking into supplementing but wanted peoples thoughts first.

Unfortunatley whey is out of the question for me. I caught a nasty virus at the time I started taking it and spent 8 hours projectiling from both ends, didn't eat properly for 3 days and as a result lost 7lbs, unsuprisingly I was also unable to train.

I blagged a few free samples of PhD Pharma Whey from a friend of a friend who runs a supplements and accesories shop in a local gym. Managed to drink a couple...just. I had no issues with keeping it down, but the taste and smell just associates itself with the norovirus to me and if im honnest found it quite difficult to drink without triggering my gag reflex.

Unless there is another way to consume the whey other than drinking it? be it in pill form? or using it as an ingredient in cooking? then unfortunatley for now, it is not a supplemnt I can use which sucks!

However the money I was going to be spending on whey can be spent else where. So I have roughly £30 a month for supplement/s. I know little about the world of supplements but an old training partner is taking BCAA's. I'm off to speak to this friend of a friend on friday to ask for my available options but thought I'd ask here too.

So £30 a month, which supplements (appart from whey). Discuss :)

Thanks in advance.

Sorry to be a part of the cliche but have you got your diet nailed first? That £30 might be better off spent on your weekly diet.

Secondly what do you want from a supplement, there are loads out there to help with focus for workouts, improved muscle pumps, better recovery, possibly strength gains, amino acids for muscle growth etc etc.

For me probably

Fish oils
ZMA (Zinc and Magnesium)
L-Glutamine
BCAA's
Beta Alanine

30 a month on supps? thats whey sorted then.

I forgot to mention I'm already taking 1000mgx4 of Triple Strength Omega 3 (SimplySupps).

Ideally I'm after anything to help me put on mass primarily or aid strength. I suppose recovery would be good too. Can you explain how better pumps could be beneficial? other than for ego boosting?

My diet is already nailed :) Getting everything I need. Which is why I've now turned to supplements.

Morba- I made my issue with whey clear. And to spec suppliments OTHER than whey. Perhaps you should re-ready my first post.

Hmmm, thanks for all the advice and replies so far.

I've been thinking about ways in which I can ingest whey (as i seem to have no problem keeping it down now, just drinking it!). I thought about using empty gelatine capsules, but dont think eating 50 of them a day is the best idea!

Is there anything I can add to a shake to mask the taste? I don't have a blender unfortunatley.

whey has little or no taste? Unless you go for flavoured stuff.

Someone posted a protein jelly recipe somewhere - I'll see if I can find it.

But I still beg the question as to why if you're on top of your diet you need that extra whey?

I've used BSD's unflavoured stuff, but it still has a smell! and a very mild taste I found. My diets pretty good, about as good as it can get on a student budget. A variety of meats, fish, fruits, veg etc, wholemeal bread, brown rice, pasta etc.

I suppose I'm looking to whey as its a cheaper source of protein. I know its a supplement and not a meal replacement. I'm getting a lot from my diet but a little more wouldn't hurt. I know going OTT with protein will only have negative results and be a waste of money. Its also low calorie. I understand bulking and cutting well, however I want to stay in that fine balance and not gain too much fat during my bulk.

Well try the flavoured stuff from BSD it's one of the nicest things I've ever had, and if you mix it with milk it really just tastes like milk (the unflavoured stuff) or a nice milkshake type of thing.

I understand the money thing - and I guess if you can't afford to get extra protein in your diet, some amino acids and whey are a good way forward.

Yeah I was considering mixing with milk instead of water. I don't mind spending a few extra pounds on milk a week :)

Well it seems I've found a flavour of whey I actually like the taste of, banana! And I don't even like banana's! Also got myself some BCAA's too:)
