BD, what is it?

Sorry about the noobishness here, but I've seen "BD" quoted about a lot of times wrt HD/DVD, but I haven't a clue as to what it stands for.

I'm guessing the speed rating is not the same as DVD/CD as it would take ages to fill a BlueRay disc at DVD2x speed.

As far as I'm aware, a 1x CD takes the same time to fill as a 1x DVD, and I guess the same as a 1x HD-DVD and a 1x BlueRay Disc. So the data rates all vary, but the time doesn't.

I am not denying its correct, BD is Blu-Ray, just never understood why

Yep - it says that on the blue ray site, complete with pretty BD logo.
