Hi guys
Recently unlocked all 4 cores of my Phenom 2 550 BE for all of like 5 mins then got the blue screen of death so went back to the 2 cores for now :P i updated my bios to the newest version for my motherboard ( Asus m4a77td pro and version 1104) just wondering what my next steps are and if this has happened to other people? was going to run Prime95 for 6 hours if it didnt crash is there anything that i have missed out?
thank you

Thanks for the feedback guys goin to try this tomorrow as at gf's house so on iPhone lol so think I will try 3 cores instead of 4 and see if it doesn't crash after 10 mins lol btw in the guide it has a guy with an older version of bios (1007) surely the one I have will have all the previous versions?

I needed to increase CPU-NB voltage (plus muchos other tweaking) on my unlocked Athlon to get it stable. Any changes are advised with caution. Look up your chip's limits for each variable (especially temps / voltages) and don't exceed them.

A few things to do if you get BSODs: Drop RAM Speed and timings (set them manually), Drop HT to lowest multi. If you get stable bring them up gradually, one at a time. Make sure CPU-NB speed is around 1800-2100.

Maybe try a little bump to vCore CPU-NB Voltage, NB-Core Voltage, NB-PCI-E voltage and even RAM voltage.

CnQ / C1E need to be off. You could try them if you get otherwise stable.

If you find stable settings save them or write everything down before changing them again.

There's always a chance you've just got a duff core. Good luck!

Bah tried just using 3 cores and the same result :( was thinking of increasing the vcore voltage but it seems everything is set on auto :s is it supposed to be like this? And also when on cpuz it says my voltage (vcore)is about 0.98v then sometimes jumps to 1.2v so what's my voltage if it's auto? Kinda confused lol

It sounds like you have Cool and Quiet enabled? It's a power saving feature that varies both your clockspeed and voltage. I'd recommend disabling it for overclocking and unlocking.

1.2 is a low voltage anyway :)

You can fiddle with it, more voltage can help get things stable but it'll increase the heat generated.

You're safe until ~1.5v but don't use more than you have to. I'd try 1.4v, see if that gets things stable with good temps (under 62 on full load). If it works then try 1.375...1.35....1.325 etc until you find your lowest stable voltage :)

ok guys CnQ was enabled even though i am sure that i disabled it lol :P ok i cant seem to change my vcore voltage or any voltage in BIOS. I am on the jumpfree config tab which has

AI overclock tuner on auto
cpu ration auto (can change)
cpu/nb frequency auto (can change)
cpu over voltage auto (can't change the value)
VDDNB ober voltage auto (can't change)
Loadline calibration auto (can change)

HT link speed auto (can change)
HT link width auto (can change)

Dram frequency auto (can change)
memory over voltage auto (can't change)

tried putting ACC and unleashing on but that wont let me change the voltages either :s am i doing something obvious wrong?
cheers

Do you have an option to let AOD control the voltages? If so you can use AMD's AOD software to set the voltages in Windows.

No worries. :D

Are you posting in the big Phenom Overclocking Thread? If not you should join. Big.Wayne is dispensing pearls of overclocking wisdom.

class :) will search for that and have a look :) btw i have tried to use the overdrive programme in novice mode so that u get an auto clock however when i try this the screen goes black and computer locks up ..total meh dont think this computer likes to be played around with :(

Safe untill 1.5?
Does it mean I'm crazy for pulling mine through 1.7 ? ; )

It means you're exceeding AMD's recommendations for overclocking on air.

All overclocking is risky. I might not have got my unlocked CPU stable if I hadn't been prepared to take some risks with the CPU-NB voltage and vCORE. Didn't leave the mat the higher settings but bumping them up let me find some headroom.
