Seriously, I never knew they could do this...

My Dad moaned at me a coupel of weeks ago that his air freshener had damaged his dashboard where it'd been hanging next to... showed it me and I was WOW... but doubt it's that surely... this is his car...

Anyway stone me, I'd forgot I'd just chucked one of these on my handbrake a couple of weeks ago... as my normal proper air freshners had ran out (that I normally clip to the air vents!)... and get this on my RX8... its' actually eaten into the plastic and melted in 2 week!

So, now, I do a fix on this or I have to buy a whole new set to replace... that is mental, whatever Alien Acid Blood they use, don't let your kids chew on one!!! TBH surely if they can do this kind of damage they shouldn't be allowed to not have protection on them... I mean, it must literally just be the same fluid you get in a bottle... however in a bottle it's not damaging!!! Absolutely furious tonight, i keep my car MINT and this happens to it...

SO GUYS, JUST A WARNING IS ALL... DON'T BE AS STUPID AS ME AND MY DAD USING BOGGO AIR FRESHNERS NEAR YOUR PLASTICS!

What is the first one? Ambi-pur? or poundshop job?

I don't use any of those cheapo ones as they dont last long, some air freshners in general give off chemicals that can stain plastics etc, I personally just use jelly belly's in my cars, never had issues with them.

See this no end in customers cars at work.

I use a good old magic tree in my car, just pull it slightly out the wrapper and leave it in the passenger door pocket, mostly because strong air fresheners set off my allergies.

This same thing happened to one of my mates brand new DS3, put an air freshener on the dash out in the sun for an afternoon and the entire air freshener and dash melted. Wish I had a picture of it.

He took it back to citroen and had the whole thing replaced as it was on a PCP plan luckily.

Never understood the need for air fresheners personally.
If you smoke in the car, perhaps. But why would you want your car to smell like a minicab?

Same with the house- those air fresheners are for smokers, surely?

How people's cars can smell so nasty that they need these things is beyond me.
I had mould in my car and it didn't smell!

And I have a very strong sense of smell. Maybe that's why I can't stand the things...?

I used to have a Poppycoral that I'd stick somewhere indiscriminately (except when I was 17 and had it in the middle of the dash). Used to like those. Now I just stick with Magic Tree Vanilla. Never been a fan of any air freshener that holds liquid.

Same here, I just change the cabin air filter at the correct interval and keep the air conditioning in working order, car smells fine.

They contain phthalates which are also used as plasticisers (softening agents) which is why they'll melt your trim. They're in all kinds of products and not especially toxic (at typical exposures), though I wouldn't recommend eating one.

I used to just hang magic trees off my indicators but my dog decided it would be fun to eat one so I don't bother at all now.
