I got the Be Box delivered ready for a changeover on Friday .

1. The instructions says not to plug it in until the line is activated.

How do I know when the activation is complete? There is no mention that I will be called, and surely if they try to email me on my old ISP the line has gone and I won't be online?

2. Can I plug it in anyway - regardless of the note not to. Reason being is to a) check that it's not DOA so that a new one can be shipped today, b) secure it in advance.

3. I read the Be forum stickies on how to secure the Be box. It shows the procedure to remove the backdoor accounts and configure the firewall.

Is there anything else I can do to the configuration to make it even more secure?

I require http(s) browsing, smtp, and ssh on a non standard port number. Everything else can be totally blocked.

No wifi required.

4. Box supplied is the Thomson SpeedTouch 585 v6.

Is this good / reliable?

About an hour after the line went down it worked straight out of the box. Didn't get any confirmation - can't remember if I stated mobile on application.

* Easy to configure, firewalled, smtp'd, networked.
* Great upload speed (1.2Mb compared to 0.4Mb with BT)
* Download speed slightly better (6Mb compared to 5Mb)
* Saving of £91.50 per year.

Anyone thinking of joining Be I can recommend it. The whole process from obtaining MAC from BT to being online with Be took just four working days. :D
