Hi, im wondering if i can use my Bebox SpeedTouch 780 router to add an internet phone ? it seems to have the telephone ports in the back but im clueless on how id set this up

can i use any phone ? or do i have to buy something like a skype phone ? also how is the telephone number assigned and how is the quality , do i have to inform my ISP ?

Any info on the subject would be much appreciated , thanks :)

You sign up with a voip provider such as www.voiptalk.org then using a normal landline handset plug that into the BeBox using the adaptors provided with the router. Set up the router with the user details of the provider you just signed up with and then your phone will be on that extension.

You get an 0560 xxxx xxx number for free for incoming calls which i think are charged at national rate and outgoing calls are quite cheap pay as you go.

Other options exist allowing you to buy incoming 0800, 0845 and localised (ie where you live Manchester 0161 for example) numbers.

The SIP/VOIP network has absolutely nothing to do with skype you will not be able to make/receive calls from skype users on this system.

Its excellent for voip telephone call. Just plug a bogstandard telephone into one of the ports with an adapter. I am with www.internetcalls.com a cheap and excellent service. They also I believe now supply a number for 1Euro ( at the time I joined mine was and indeed still is Free) get an ordinary number not one of those 0845 0870 numbers . The number rings. Its good to have an extra telephone line as naturally one can use both telephones at the same time as indeed the internet! All calls are available to see and download from the site and also topup as needed - which I do ever 4 months or when the money runs out - but as you can see with the Uk and all mainline countries free the only call costs are to mobiles and 0870 and 0845 Excellent reception in the Uk and to OZ Naturally I never use the ordinary telephone to make calls

The settings are:
Registrar: sip.internetcalls.com
Registrar port: 5060
Proxy: sip.internetcalls.com
Proxy port: 5060
Expire time: 3600

In the other setup box
Sip uri: sip.internetcalls.co
Username: whatever it is Smithie ( or whatever you use to lig onto the site is)
Password: xxxxxxx

etc
