Hi all,

I've ordered my broadband recently from Be Internet (the Be Unlimited package at £24 a month) and just waiting now for my free Be Box.

Does anyone know if the supplied box supports a VPN endpoint or whether it is simply a VPN pass-thru only? I need to know asap really as my internet is being enabled at the end of this week and I need a VPN router to be able to access the network at work!

Also it'll take up to 3 days for delivery of a new router so I would need to order today. The router I would order is the Draytek 2800VG as I've found Draytek routers to be absolutely bullet-proof.

I'd be inclined to check the forums at www.adslguide.org as there are a few posts there about replacing the BeBox due to more complex VPN requirements.

The Zyxel 662HW has been used successfully according to posts in this thread :

Thanks for the tip. I've looked on that thread but I can't work out where the problem may lie. In terms of having a static IP address, I've ordered one of these as I require one to be able to create a VPN tunnel at the office end of the network. Should I have any problems with this and if so, what do I need to look out for when choosing a ADSL2+ router with VPN capabilities? Looking at that thread, the Draytek should work ok as I can adjust all the given settings no problem.

I'd suggest you post over there and describe exactly what you need to do and see what advice you get.

If you only have a need for a single VPN it may be that the standard BeBox will do.

Thanks, I've done that, just waiting for replies now!

I would need to create 3 VPN tunnels so perhaps the Be Box may be no good?

What type of VPN?

If you use Cisco (IPSec NAT-T) or OpenVPN, which both go over UDP, you can theoretically have as many concurrent connections as you wish (subject to the memory of the NAT router). Windows XP/2003 PPTP (crappy) is a bit harder since the GRE protocol which is part of it isn't easily NAT-able.

I use IPSec VPNs to all sites.

No-one seems to know if the Be Box can support even a single VPN tunnel, never mind several at once!

I need a hardware VPN setting up as I use my laptop and PDA to connect to work sometimes which obviously don't have VPN functionality built in.

Having read the forums on Be and thinkbroadband.com it would seem that the Drayteks do work but at a reduced speed - about 7 or 8Mb in most cases compared to around 15Mb if the Be Box is used.

Any recommendations on another ADSL2+ router to use which also has VoIP and a printer port built in? I could just get another box to route through the Be Box but this means reconfiguring the Be Box and also another plug socket in use under my desk!

As a fellow Be*ing I'd ask on the Be* member services forums, they have a sub forum for the Be Box. I for one don't use the Be box as I found it a bit of a pig to configure however others swear by it :)
