Be Internet- Connection Issues with Source Games

Hello Folks.

Has anyone else had any connection issues with Be's 24mbps service and games such as Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2?

I am calling them up tonight but thought I would ask on here first.

Basically my line is normally fine, rarely needing to resync unless I load up one of the afore mentioned games. Often when playing L4D especially, the game will tell me there is a connection error and boot me off the server.
Often the modem looses the connection completely and I have to power cycle it to get the internet restored.

It strikes me as odd that it is source games that tend to instigate this rather than just general use/downloading.

I am using the standard Be Box which came with the package, a Thompson router iirc.

Thanks

Hi all,

Thanks for the responses so far. I will have a further look when I get home and check the firewall is turned off.

Typically Skype gives me no issues, and I use a dedicated skype phone as well as a client installed on my rig.

@Azuse05 I actually have an old wrt54g (i think it's an 's' rather than an 'l') sat in the loft. I may try to attach that if you think it increases performance. Would it involve switching the wireless off on the BeBox and using the bridging options to share the connection with it?

Other than these connection issues the line is great. I get pings of 6 on some servers!!!

So just to confirm, I pass the connection through the BeBox to the linksys router making sure all the added funtionality is turned off on the BeBox, and then connect all my clients to the wrtgs rather than the be box?

I have version 7 wrtgs I believe, I remember trying to install Tomato before and hitting a brick wall.

When you set it to bridged it just becomes a simple modem passing the signal from phone line to whatever router you attach, which controls the lan.

The GS v7 doesn't run linux which is why tomato won't work, and it only has 2meg rom so you're limited to either the official firmware or dd-wrt micro. There some screen shots of that here.

Ok, thanks for the info.

Would I see any tangible benefit from changing the firmware over to dd-wrt micro?

Just going to dig out the router now :)

I had this problem and was trying to work it out the weekend. I'm on o2 and it seems like a lot of o2/BE/BT customers are having the same issues especially with left 4 dead after the new crash course update. I just basically assigned 'steam games' to my pcs reserved ip address in the router's device section, i seriously didn't think it would work as it seems too simple, but its been working the last two days now- no more drop outs in left 4 dead! By the way i'm using the wireless II box with the latest firmware (7.4.20.5).

Thanks for the tip, I have however forwarded all my ports. :(

OK, I have plugged the linksys router's internet port into the first ethernet port on the BeBox.
I have left me main rig plugged into the second port on the Bebox, and I have my HTPC plugged into the first port on the linksys.

So far the Linksys is not picking up the internet from the Bebox.

I have used my main PC to connect to the Bebox (which is a Thompson TG585v7), but cannot find any options to bridge the connection. Does anyone know how I can tell it to interface with the Linksys?

Thanks

Sorry, I am still a little confused.

Right now the BeBox has wireless and firewall disabled. Other than that it is set up to use the static IP that I receive with my service.
I found no options on the BeBox to interface with a router, so assume that is all on the Linksys.

I have the 1st ethernet port on the BeBox connecting to the Internet port on my linksys router.

Am I right in thinking that all the configuration now has to be done on the Linksys router?
I have found a page in the Linksys setup to allow advanced routing, and it looks like I can set the router to connect to the BeBox. Some of the settings are confusing me though.

The linksys router would like the following info under advanced routing:

Operating Mode: Router/Gateway - I chose Gateway as I assume thats what I'm trying to connect to.

Destination IP- (I am not sure what to put here, I tried putting the IP of the BeBox 192.168.1.252, but then it asks me for a gateway IP. I also tried putting in my static IP but this was uneventful)

Subnet Mask- I assume is 255.255.255.0

Gateway IP- this is where I was putting the IP of the BeBox.

Interface: Wireless and LAN / WAN (Internet) - Here I chose WAN (Internet)

On the basic routing page I have it to automatic configuration DHCP (Although I assume my settings in advanced routing override this?

BTW my BeBox software version is 7.4.20.3.

Sorry if all this is a bit confusing, I have been tweaking the settings for a while now and no joy.
