when I totally switch off the pc socket by the wall switch and get home from work and turn it on I see a flash inside the psu ( reddish tint ) and a loud cracking noise but the power supply and pc work fine, is this normal for a high wattage psu ?

Not normal at all. It would suggest that something inside has failed. Check that the mains lead is all the way in first but if it is don't use it in your pc as you could end up damaging something. Take it out and do the paperclip test as suggested above (you will need to plug some fan's into it to see if it's working) although I would be tempted just to RMA it. After seeing that happen I would have no confidence in it and wouldn't trust it with my components.

thanks guys i'll dig my old one out loft and rma it, regards why I switch it off, the damn corsair led keyboard stays lit up all day otherwise so to save on electricity.

just to confirm though it works perfectly as in my pc powers on and works fine.

As above, I would try and RMA it.

Why are you switching off via a wall socket though? While it shouldn't make a lot of difference, I wouldn't have thought being constantly hard powered off/on would be great for a PSU

I presume he uses his the same way I use mine and that is to shut the pc down as normal then switch the power off at the wall socket. I do this around 3 times every day and have never had any problems.
