Ive just taken delivery of this new router modem, kindly given free with BE*. Anyone used this new box yet ? is it any good ? Im currently using a Netgear 834N (works flawless) I see this new thompson has usb mass storage also.

Im with O2 and I have the same unit, was using a Belkin N+ before, synced slower and not very good usb storage.

The Thompson syncs higher 8mb opposed to 5 ish. The wireless n is just as good and the usb storage is spot on SMB sharing and FTP access. I have a 1TB drive hooked up and sharing all my media.

All in all a solid all round box.

Been trying to get my TG585v7 replaced with this as my wireless signal is non-existent (use to work but seems to have degraded over time), Be's reply "They supply no other router than the TG585v7," sigh :(

Yay, I won one too. It came this morning. Plugged it in and no problems so far. I'm sure I've even got 1Mbit more speed taking me to 15. The old 585v5 BeBox I had used to crash all the time so anything with a bit of stability is a major boon.

What are the two USB slots for?

Printer/HDD.

What, so if I plug my NTFS HDD in to the USB socket it will appear as a shared drive on the network? That sounds delightful. I wonder if my PS3 will be able to pick it up.

EDIT: Probably a bit too hopeful. It doesn't like NTFS or ex-FAT partitions. Will have to reformat as FAT32 and try again.

After a quick play with this unit, it syncs no better, no worse than my DG834N, and your right, the usb sharing only seems to support fat32. The interface is horrid compared to netgear, but i`ll leave it running for a week or so, see how it compares. Wifi range for N based, again is identical to my 4 year old netgear. The vents ontop of the thompson, sure does pump out some heat !!! Edit. Usb sharing DOES support NTFS formatted hard drives ;-)

I wonder if this new router will stop the random, frequent server disconnects I get from Battlefield on the PS3. Oooh! I must try.

Can I ask what firmware you are using on the 834N? Is it the netgear standard firmware?

Thanks Mart

Use a TG587 for my Be* connection, wireless is pretty poor but wired is fine. I did replace it with a DG834GT for a while but that crashed all the time and I reckon it was because of overheating, it did sync faster than the Thomson at 15.6mb rather than 15.4mb... But connection speed is pretty useless if you don't have a connection for 2 minutes at a time every 10-15 minutes :/
I have since gone back to the 587 and it works fine, just don't ask it to do wireless.

Ive found the wireless range to be identical to my old Netgear DG834N (well within reason). Its held steady for a few days, but i did have a rock steady connection on the netgear for 3 year previous (i sync about 17.5 meg on a 26db profile). Now the usb on the thompson allowing ntfs dives, this feature is quite handy, and allows printer sharing if you require. Ill give it a few more weeks yet before i decide if it`ll replace the DG834n.

I received one free from BE last week too. Currently boxed up, as I'm using my existing 780WL in bridged mode with a Buffalo wireless router. Might get 587 hooked up this way later if my hangover lets up!

Did you win yours? Or did they just send it out?

Just sent it out randomly really. Been with them since early 2007 and have their landline, so may have been a loyalty thing

I bitched about the older bebox, and got sent the new box. Have been with be nigh on 5 years. The new box isn't brilliant on wireless, but has been rock solid since I hooked it up. I cant stand the Thompson interface, but the 2 usb ports, for sharing are useful. I've no idea how it would fair on a lesser signal. This Thompson reports my db as 24. 5 , and my older netgear and older bebox reported 26db. I'm going to use the older bebox in bridge mode, as a wireless access point. The netgear will be used as a backup unit.
