I recently came into some extra money and I was thinking about buying a PS4...But then I woke up from the nightmare and realised what a big waste of money it could have been. It got me thinking though. Could you build a better gaming PC for the same price of a release day PS4 (£400*)?

I'm intrigued to see what you guys come up with because I think it is possible to do so with that budget.

EDIT: Budget of £500*

I would probably get a cheap Core i3 - in some games like Thief and Watch Dogs there can be stuttering(its not a pure framerate thing more a frametime issue),which the Core i3 does not have a problem with.

Also, you will need a copy of Windows on top of the hardware costs too.

This is a quick build I came up with:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-010-AS
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-339-SP
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SW-165-MS
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-115-CS
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-257-SE
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-101-AE

Its not the highest end motherboard in the world and only has two RAM slots, but is functional(you could probably get a higher end PSU too,but the combination does not draw that much power IMHO).

Comes to around £521 including postage and a copy of Windows. I did not include an optical drive as you can install Windows from a suitably large flash drive.

So you can can build a Haswell Core i5 and R9 270 rig for just over £500.

It depends on the game. I found I was more CPU limited in some games like PS2 and Civ5 with a Core i3 for example, but YMMV OFC.

BTW,good spot on the B-grade 1TB drive,if I plonk that into the build I suggested,it will more or less quite close to the £500 the OP suggested.

Ultimately if the OP could bump the budget upto £550,they could get a GTX760 and the HX550W,with a Core i5.

Having said that I expect R9 280 prices to start going down now anyway.

I would agree that case looks better though - looks internally like one my mate got a few off on the sale on here a while back.

So something like this for around £550:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-010-AS
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-347-AS
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SW-165-MS
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-003-SF
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BG-114-SE
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-096-XG

That will give a Core i5 4440 and a GTX760 for around £562 and with the Gold Rated PSU too.

OP: do you need an OS for this. If not it'll be pretty easy to get something decent for £500

No need for operating systems

£500* is my way of saying it's ok to go other, just not dramatically. Limit of £600 tops.

EDIT: Some interesting builds here guys.

Maybe something like this? The bundle is saving you a bit of cash and is decent spec. Can clock the CPU to over 4GHz and it's great bang for buck (I have an 8320 fwiw).

YOUR BASKET
1 x EPIC BUNDLE: AMD FX-8350, Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3, AMD 8GB 2133MHz Kit, Superflower 650W PSU & FREE STUFF!! **£30 SAVING** £341.92
1 x Powercolor Radeon R9 280 TurboDUO 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £155.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM003) HDD £39.95
1 x BitFenix Neos ATX Tower Black/Black £29.99
1 x Raijintek Aidos Direct Contact CPU Cooler £14.99
Total : £596.93 (includes shipping : £11.75).

I don't know how long you intend to use your PC for but remember that a PS4 isn't just £400 when you factor in PSN which costs £whatever per year. And depending on the number of games you buy on day 1, you save around £10 on the PC version.

Also, if you were going to spend £400 on a PS4 for gaming then £200 on a cheap PC for other stuff, then a £600 PC will definitely satisfy both.
