Becoming a plumber

At present i work for local government in environmental health and have done for the last 8 years (Currently 24)

Despite working in an office ive always been a "hands on" person and prefer doing manual things such as messing with cars or helping the old mn with diy at home etc.

Anyay im considering changing to a career in plumbing. How would i go about getting started?

Obviously i know i will have to take quite a big drop in salary during training but what is the current training allowance or similar whislt training to be a plumber?

Is it like 4 days with a local plumbing company as an apprentice then 1 day at college or is it all at college for certain period of time before applying to a local company?

Any help appreciated :)
 
You should really do a plumbing course. There are loads of evening plumbing courses available and they dont take long or cost too much as they are standard / needed tradesmen. You can work with a plumbing company too but if it was me I'd get the qualification as quick as possible. As an apprentice they'll only make you sweep up unless you get a good one.

Qualified, i'd get down to the bank and provide them with a comprehensive business plan. Get a smallish loan and buy a van and a decent array of tools.

Remember, plumbers can be intricate people and a good understanding of electronics is highly regarded (top plumbers set up neat little timing devices, wireless thermostats, etc).

A close friend of mine last year earnt the equivalent of £90 / hour

EDIT: Oh, btw, a Corgi licence each year costs plumbers = £££££££££££££££££ but you only have to be Corgi registered if you are dealing with Gas. However, people seem to prefer Corgi qualified even if its only water plumbing they are interested in.

I'm keeping my 9-5 job to get into plumbing & doing a few nights a week at a local company doing a course, should end up Corgi registered next year.

Aint cheap though, costing a fair bit.
 
Rang up local college today about evening city @ guilds plumbing course they do but they have already enlisted people for he new term.

Cant get on now until september 2008!!

Any suggestions? :(
 
^^ same thing happened to me last year when I wanted to do an Electrical Installation course. Just had to wait it out in the end but applied very early, before Christmas infact for starting this week.
