Hello,

I am trying to research this online but not getting any solid answers that are helping me so I need to branch out for some personal experiences.

The scenario I am looking at is as follows:

I am looking to buy a second bike to commute on and have found something that would suit me. I am currently insured on my current bike and the insurer can add another bike to the policy at what seems no extra charge. The insurer does say online that it cannot quote if i am not the "registered" vehicles keeper.
I was wanting to ride the bike home after purchasing it (privately) but according to the insurance i cannot get insured until I am the registered owner.
I am trying to get my head around this, does registered owner mean doing the V5 paperwork and waiting for the V5 to arrive at my house (i.e a couple of weeks turnaround)?

It may sound silly being stuck in this scenario but this is my first time looking into a private sale. Always had the dealers backing when purchasing bikes.

My only other thoughts was if the above scenario was true and I had to wait several weeks to become registered I guess it would be getting the bike home by hiring a van.

Once you've bought the bike and are handed the slip from the V5 that allows you to get it taxed, you are the registered keeper. Obviously the vendor needs to send in the part of the V5 with your details on so the DVLA can claim they never received it and try and fine him, but you are the registered keeper.

Ah, much clearer! Thank you.

So with the tax still on the bike I would then be legal to ride the bike (providing I have told my insurer). I thought I was over thinking this as it would make my scenario very painful and lengthy trying to pick up a bike from someone.
