Bedbugs

A short while ago, I created a thread about finding a dead body. Recently we found out that he had bedbugs. Apparently he was covered in bites and had spoken to another neighbour about it. Then we found out, that another flat in the same block, next to his, is infested with them. They sent out some inspectors to all flats and my partner has none. I even checked my mattress and I found none. If you are curious as to how to check, pull up you bottom sheet and check around the mattress edges for the creatures or droppings. It looks dark around there apparently.

The flat which was thought to have triggered them, has now been cleared and apparently there were no signs of bedbugs. Seems his bites were not that. However the other flat at the rear does have them and they have burnt the mattress and fumigated the flat. They sent more inspectors and they again gave my partner a clean bill. It's all a bit gross and I'm glad I don't have to get rid of my bed. My partner spent a rude amount on her one and it is very nice. She is feeling very paranoid about them migrating and she has bought some spray and sprayed the hallway outside her flat and the floor just inside the door. Apparently, that's about the best thing you can do.

Has anyone else had experience with these nasty little things? Feeling itchy now, after writing this lol.

I have unfortunately experienced these little critters..

I once took the OH on a weekend away to a luxury hotel. We got back to the room late after some drinks and went to bed. I was a bit tipsy and remember brushing something off me, but went back to sleep. A few moments later I was wide awake as something was crawling on me! The OH thought I was hallucinating or something, and didn't feel a thing. It was only when I whipped back the covers on my side and something scuttled away from the light that she realised that we weren't alone.

I went to reception who got the night manager and I demanded another room, but he wouldn't let us move anything to another part of the hotel in case the bugs were spread, and said we need to wait in our room until morning when he spoke to the general manager. He even implied we must have brought them with us because the hotel doesn't have bed bugs!

After a sleepless night and some Googling about bed bugs, I had several live specimens captured under drinking glasses which were all different sizes, which clearly showed that the bugs were part of an established colony because the bugs were at different stages of development. I also had identified areas on the bedding which showed their presence.

The general manager acknowledged that the bed bugs must have been there before we arrived, moved us into a standard room because there were no other luxury rooms available, but refunded us and offered us another weekend there for free.

On the way home, I bought a fumigation kit. We weren't living together at the time, and I was renting a 1st floor flat. Before going inside, I hung up my clothes (except what I was wearing) in the garage, lit the fumigation smoke bomb thing and closed the garage door to fumigate my clothes.

I then entered my porch, stripped, and carried my clothes in a carrier bag straight to the washing machine and set it going, then showered. By this time I had lots of little bite marks in triangular patterns on my right leg and stomach.

The OH thought I was overreacting (maybe I was) and didn't feel the need to take the measures I did. She was also renting a flat at the time and simply washed all her clothes when she got home.

I didn't get any bed bugs at my flat, thank goodness, but when I visited the OHs place the next weekend, I was sitting on the sofa and saw something out of the corner of my eye.. Low and behold it was a solitary bed bug on the sofa!

She thought I was overreacting when I told her the sofa will probably have to go, and she simply gave the sofa a good vacuum and a clean. She never did get an infestation at her place. I reckon she did bring a few in but they were unable to get their blood meal to enable multiplication before they died.

Anyway, when we went back to the hotel for out free stay, there were some gifts put out for us in the room which was nice. The head of housekeeping told us that they'd dismantled the bed and found that there was indeed a colony of bedbugs inside the bedframe, and they'd fumigated the room and the room either side too. She also said that, in her many years of experience doing hotel housekeeping, it tends to be the luxury rooms that get them because international travellers book these rooms more frequently than UK guests and bring the little buggers with them.

Since this incident I do a thorough bed bug check as soon as I arrive at a hotel room, it's just second nature now.

One final note. Whenever the OH and I are together and we encounter insects, they seem to ignore her and go straight for me! Maybe I'm a bigger heat source or something.

Ohhhh yes I have experienced this. It was thoroughly unpleasant as they got into a house share I lived in, while I had a girlfriend living elsewhere. In the end the landlords were being ******** about this several other issues so we let our contract expire and moved on. But not without about a month of horribly disturbed sleep, paranoia, itchy bites (her more than me), etc.

When I moved out I bagged up all my clothes after washing them at 60. I was still paranoid and checking things with a torch in the night for a year or so. I still check for bedbugs in any hotel etc but thankfully don't feel the fear and the phantom itching at home any more.

Ew.

I lived in a house that got bedbugs. It was a shared house and one of my housemates had a boyfriend that had had them in his house. She told me after we had spotted our first juvenile bedbug.
We managed to get on top of bugs using sprays, diatomaceous earth, and double sided sticky tape around all bed legs.
Thankfully we only caught a few juveniles on the bed legs and the infestation petered out.

I had it when I was in a rental flat, my and my wife in the same bed and I keep getting bites but my wife had non. At the end we spot blood on the sheets and looked up on the internet.....OMG

Set alarm at 3am and jump out of bed and switch on all the light and see those buggers clawing back to all the creases and wall sockets!!

We try to sort it ourselves with spray , fumigate , powder but at the end we got the professional in and done the whole flat. Notified landlord and neighbors. Until today we still don't know where we picked it up and is a mystery that only I get bitten over the weeks but my wife had non.

Some people don't react to bites at all whereas some get red marks, or even swelling and itching. I also was convinced I never got bitten while the girlfriend was going crazy scratching her bites. I remember finding one or two bites on me in the end and they were just tiny marks. Hers were awful.
